Talk:Membership fees/Archive 1

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

For those who might not understand the point of this issue

  • example : american people will have membership at the wikimedia foundation because it is on their territory. Why would they pay only once to belong to Wikimedia (and vote globally) while german people would have to pay twice ?
  • fees will help pay servers for example, which are used by all wikimedia users, why would only the foundation pay for them, and not the local chapters ? How do we organise this ? Ultimately, the local chapters will hopefully be very numerous, would that mean that Wikimedia does not have any fees anymore ? Should local chapter gives back part of their revenues first to help global architecture costs, second to help small projects/language with no chapter ?
What kind bizarre doublespeak is this?! The foundation is the global entity, NOT A LOCAL CHAPTER!!!! I plan to start a Northern California chapter, so I'll be part of both a local and a global Wikimedia organization. People who do not have or who do not want to participate in a local chapter can be part of just the global entity. But they should not at all ever have the option of only belonging just to the local chapter. That would only increase the chances of a local chapter deciding to fork and go off on its own. --mav 19:11, 17 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I think you are getting nervous for no reason Mav, as you very clearly misunderstood what I meant. So, I am gonna remove it entirely and hope that other people understand better. My point is that anyone belonging to any local chapter be made by default a global member. But that means there must be crossing of membership data. For all I know, there is a german chapter now, and we have NO list of members. So, technically, we cant prove they do belong to t h e foundation. I wish that you just assume good faith from me. I am *precisely* trying to find a way to have it clear that the foundation is global and not local. That means there must be FINANCIAL relationships between chapters and crossing of member data. Fine. Please, instead of blowing fume not trying to understand what I meant, please rephrase it in proper english. I *heavily* support that any member of a local chapter is automatically member globally, but that also means that upon time, most fees will stay local, and dwarf Foundation income. Since Foundation is right now supporting all architecture, I think that is a quesiton to discuss Mav. So, avoid shouting please. ant
Understood - sorry, I'm in a bad mood today. --mav
Sorry about that. It so is that I have in a very bad mood myself today as well. But please Mav, remember there are few people as dedicated as me to make this Foundation be really international, and all projects strongly sticking to one another. Might you add things to official position to help me please ?
