From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

As a unique project, both the management core of Wikimedia and hosting its own organizations and community, Meta is in a position to both require and foster cooperation between cross-wiki groups such as the stewards, sysadmins and staff as well as the local Meta community. The relationship, therefore, between Meta and those users should be as cooperative as possible while respecting each other's sovereignty. For the purposes of this page, staff, sysadmins and stewards will all be referred to as "stewards" - this is primarily for historical reasons, as these three groups were originally all stewards, and were separated only recently.

Logging of actions[edit]

In the event that a user of any access is capable of performing an action either logged or unlogged, the local community requires that the action is logged unless it is impossible or impractical to do so; this ensures all processes are maximally transparent.

Bot policy[edit]

Meta is both host to and a subscriber of the global bot policy, where certain classes of bots may be flagged as such by the stewards without an explicit local approval discussion. Classes of bots not meeting these requirements are discussed at the appropriate local page. Approvals are welcome after discussion from anyone both understanding of the discussion and capable of assigning the permission locally.

Sensitive permissions[edit]

Some permissions, such as checkuser and oversight, may be held by both stewards and local Meta users. Where a request for Oversight or CheckUser is made, those holding the relevant permission locally should fulfil the request. However, to ensure that requests do not stagnate due to quibbles regarding jurisdiction, stewards may fulfil requests where required. The checkuser and oversight policies continue to apply as normal.

Promotions[edit]

If a local request for permissions closes, it is requested to allow seven days for a local bureaucrat to determine the outcome. If neither an outcome nor discussion between the local bureaucrats has started during that time, the stewards may feel free to close the request, respecting the local criteria for adminship.

Both local bureaucrats and stewards may immediately revoke adminship from a temporary admin who performs administrative tasks outside the specific tasks assigned, or when the temporary permission expires.

Administrative actions on Meta[edit]

Stewards have administrator and bureaucrat access on Meta for the duration of their stewardship, as part of their steward role. However, they should avoid using this access for local MetaWiki tasks unless they are members of the MetaWiki community or the task is uncontroversial.

Examples of uncontroversial tasks include straightforward rename requests, page deletions, countervandalism, and editing the spam or title blacklists.
