Tech News: 2021-14[edit]
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Editors can collapse part of an article so you have to click on it to see it. When you click a link to a section inside collapsed content it will now expand to show the section. The browser will scroll down to the section. Previously such links didn't work unless you manually expanded the content first. [1]
Changes later this week
The citoid API will use for example
2010-12-XX
instead of2010-12
for dates with a month but no days. This is because2010-12
could be confused with2010-2012
instead ofDecember 2010
. This is called level 1 instead of level 0 in the Extended Date/Time Format. [2]The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 April. It will be on all wikis from 8 April (calendar).
Future changes
PAWS can now connect to the new Wiki Replicas. Cross-database
JOINS
will no longer work from 28 April. There is a new way to connect to the databases. Until 28 April both ways to connect to the databases will work. If you think this affects you and you need help you can post on Phabricator or on Wikitech.

Mistakenly blocked in a global IP block[edit]
Hello,
It appears I have been mistakenly included in a global IP block you made today on 10.64.32.67. I have never vandalized Wikipedia or any MediaWiki project, and you can see my contributions here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Percivl Weirdly enough, I'm not editing on a proxy nor have I ever edited on a proxy, so I'm not sure why I was included in this ban.
Is there a way for you to permit me a global IP block exemption? I'd sincerely appreciate it.
Thanks, Percivl (talk) 18:29, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
- I'm also blocked from editing enwp, the message says something about a proxy server ... I am not using a proxy server. Mistake? - Bri (talk) 18:33, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
- I am also included in this global IP block, despite the fact that I am not using a proxy server, I am using the same apartment WiFi that I've been using the whole time I've edited. Kncny11 (talk) 18:40, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
- I have also been affected by this block, presumably by mistake. I'm not editing on a proxy (I don't even know how those work), much like the two contributors above me. The block reason was for "cross-wiki spam", but I only edit on the English Wikipedia and mainly do vandalism reverting there. MerelyPumpkin (talk) 18:41, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
- I am also included in that block of 10.64.32.67 Teishin (talk) 18:44, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
- I received the exact same block message with the exact same IP address mentioned, despite editing on my WiFi and also never using a proxy. I think this is a mistake unfairly affecting several users including myself, so would really appreciate you looking into this. Mediocre Legacy (talk) 18:47, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
One of my IP's are banned?[edit]
Ok so when I tried editing a article, it said that the ip of 10.64.32.67 was blocked for one year... despite the fact that I never used this proxy. I have no idea how this specific IP has affected me but I can't even edit in articles anymore. I use public IP's on at least 3 different devices though they are all logged in with this account and I never editied anonymously. I want to continue editing in enwiki but I don't know how to do when it feels like my account is blocked, is there anything I can do to continue editing? --SuperSkaterDude45 (talk) 18:40, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
10.64.32.67[edit]
Hi GG, looks like there is something odd going on with your block of 10.64.32.67. Not sure why anyone is presenting with this unroutable IP but it prob shouldn't be blocked? — xaosflux Talk 18:48, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Green Giant. I pinged stewards on IRC and Martin Urbanec has removed the block while we figure out what happened here...it's unclear exactly what went wrong, but it looks like this global block somehow hit a LOT of people it shouldn't have. I'm curious where this IP came from in the first place, since 10. IPs would be internal to the WMF network... GeneralNotability (talk) 18:49, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
- Apologies to the people affected by this @Percivl, Bri, Kncny11, MerelyPumpkin, Teishin, Mediocre Legacy, and SuperSkaterDude45:. It wasn’t intended to block any of you specifically and I hope you are now able to edit again.
- @Xaosflux, GeneralNotability, and Martin Urbanec: I’m not sure what has happened here but this IP was one of three being presented on an XFF header when I checked an IP being used by a spammer. I am not sure how we can look into it further without repeating the Checkuser I did earlier. Martin, thank you for undoing the block. --Green Giant (talk) 22:45, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
- We chatted in IRC a bit on this, maybe there is something on your stewards mailing list. Seems to be a possible temporary problem with one of the load balancers/WMF proxies passing that on. FWIW anything in RFC 1918 ranges usually mean something is broken :) — xaosflux Talk 00:47, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

Tech News: 2021-16[edit]
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Email to the Wikimedia wikis are handled by groups of Wikimedia editors. These volunteer response teams now use Znuny instead of OTRS. The functions and interface remain the same. The volunteer administrators will give more details about the next steps soon. [3][4]
- If you use syntax highlighting, you can see line numbers in the 2010 and 2017 wikitext editors when editing templates. This is to make it easier to see line breaks or talk about specific lines. Line numbers will soon come to all namespaces. [5][6][7]
Because of a technical change there could be problems with gadgets and scripts that have an edit summary area that looks similar to this one. If they look strange they should use
mw.loader.using('mediawiki.action.edit.styles')
to go back to how they looked before. [8]- The latest version of MediaWiki came to the Wikimedia wikis last week. There was no Tech News issue last week.
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- The user group
oversight
will be renamedsuppress
. This is for technical reasons. This is the technical name. It doesn't affect what you call the editors with this user right on your wiki. This is planned to happen in two weeks. You can comment in Phabricator if you have objections.
