Community feedback-cycle about updating the Wikimedia Terms of Use starts[edit]
Hello everyone,
Wikimedia Foundation Legal Department is organizing a feedback-cycle with community members to discuss updating the Wikimedia Terms of Use.
The Terms of Use (ToU) are the legal terms that govern the use of websites hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. We will be gathering your feedback on a draft proposal from February through April. The draft will be translated into several languages, with written feedback accepted in any language.
This update comes in response to several things:
- Implementing the Universal Code of Conduct
- Updating project text to the Creative Commons BY-SA 4.0 license
- Proposal for better addressing undisclosed paid editing
- Bringing our terms in line with current and recently passed laws affecting the Foundation, including the European Digital Services Act
As part of the feedback cycle two office hours will be held, the first on March 2, the second on April 4.

Community feedback-cycle about updating the Wikimedia Terms of Use closes[edit]
Hi everyone,
The comment period for changes to the Terms of Use has closed as of April 24, 2023. On behalf of the Legal department and the Foundation, I’d like to thank everyone who offered questions, comments, or even just stopped by to read through the page out of curiosity! We were pleased with the quality and volume of comments. They have been integral to creating a Terms of Use document that will serve the community and the projects going forward. Even when some feedback could not be directly integrated in changes in the terms of use text, we’ve still reviewed your comments and they have helped influence the Legal department’s other policies and work.
We have shared a couple of draft iterations during the 60 day comment period. The next step will be for the legal team to take some time to review everything, draft a final version that will be published in mid-May on the Meta consultation page[1], then we will finalize the approvals and put the update officially on Foundation wiki. Thank you to everyone who provided questions and comments!
