Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda/Wiki For Refugees 2024

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

The Wiki for Refugees 2024 project is a compassionate initiative aimed at harnessing the power of Wikimedia projects to support and empower refugees and host communities in Uganda. By providing access to information and enabling their active participation in knowledge creation, we aspire to make a positive impact on the lives of displaced individuals.

This program will be divided into three parts as follows:

  1. Intensive training: Introducing the participants to key skills and tools on how to update/edit and add articles to Wikipedia for participants of the event.
  2. Edit-a-thon: Improving stub articles and creating new entries about critical topics, underrepresented groups, initiatives, and up-to-date figures about refugees etc.
  3. Creating content for upload on Wikimedia Commons including videos, photos and audios to document the life of refugees in Uganda.

Project Goals[edit]

  • Enhance Access to Information: To improve refugees' access to vital information, knowledge, and resources through Wikimedia projects.
  • Facilitate Empowerment: To empower refugees to become contributors and editors, enabling them to share their own stories and experiences.
  • Foster Inclusivity: To foster a more inclusive Wikimedia community by embracing diversity and welcoming refugee voices.

Project Objectives[edit]

  1. Wikipedia Editing Workshops: To organize Wikipedia editing workshops and training sessions for refugees, equipping them with the skills to create and edit Wikipedia articles.
  2. Creation of Refugee-Centric Content: To facilitate the creation of Wikipedia articles, Wikibooks, and other content that addresses the unique experiences, challenges, and cultures of refugees.
  3. Multilingual Collaboration: To promote multilingual collaboration, enabling refugees to contribute in their preferred languages.
  4. Community Building: To build a supportive community of editors, including refugees and local volunteers, who collaborate on refugee-related content.

Planned Activities[edit]

  1. Refugee-Centric Wikipedia Workshops: Organize workshops in refugee camps and community centers to introduce refugees to Wikipedia editing and content creation.
  2. Content Creation Drives: Launch content creation drives, encouraging refugees to contribute articles and resources related to their experiences and needs.
  3. Translation Efforts: Facilitate translation efforts to make content available in multiple languages spoken by refugees.
  4. Awareness Campaigns: Run awareness campaigns in collaboration with refugee organizations to promote the project and its goals.
  5. Collaboration with Local Institutions: Collaborate with local institutions and NGOs to identify opportunities for knowledge sharing and support.

Why are we doing this Project[edit]

  1. Refugees often face significant barriers to accessing information and resources. By providing access to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, we empower them with valuable knowledge.
  2. The project recognizes the importance of preserving refugee voices and experiences, ensuring that their stories are documented and shared globally.
  3. This initiative aligns with Wikimedia's commitment to inclusivity and diversity, enriching the content and perspectives found on Wikimedia platforms.
