Wikimedia Photo Contests in Nigeria: Learning & Evaluation

Wikipedia photography contests in Nigeria are one of the numerous programs of the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria and serve as a means of uploading media files that are realistically useful for educational purposes for use on Wikipedia articles and outside of the Wikimedia movement.

Purpose of evaluation[edit]

The primary purpose of this evaluation is to have a better understanding of the impact of the photography contests, including the priority goals of participants. The following are the aims of this evaluation.

  2. The priority goals of the participants
  3. The extent of involvement of the participants
  4. Understant if the contest meet their goals for participating
  5. The extent at which training impact on their contributions.
  6. What participants think should be improved
  7. Praticipants opinion about prizes
  8. What works well
  9. What aren't working well

Participants priority goals[edit]

A survey was shared with all the participants of our photography contests in Nigeria. A total of 31 participants responded to the survey, of whom 41.9% reported that their priority goal was to enrich the Wikimedia projects; 22.6% of the participants goal was to win prizes. 19.4% of the respondents' priority goals were to contribute their works, and 12.9% of the participants goals were to increase their contributions.

This result shows that while participants want to improve the quality of Wikipedia articles with photos, prizes play a significant role in their participation. 51.6% of respondents think that the prize awards should be increased.
