Wikidata is a project to create a free knowledge base about the world that can be read and edited by humans and machines alike. It will provide data in all the languages of the Wikimedia projects, and allow for the central access to data in a similar vein as Wikimedia Commons does for multimedia files. Wikidata is proposed as a new Wikimedia hosted and maintained project.

This page is intended to provide the entry point for talking about the Wikidata project proposal and the status of the project.

In order to make the size of this page a bit more feasible, a number of subsites have been created:

  • Archive provides links to a number of previous efforts around similar topics.
  • Technical proposal describes the technical project proposal.
  • Essays provides focused discussion of single issues, where input is specifically requested.

This page offers a very short overview.

Note that the Wikidata team has not started working yet. I understand that quite many itch to discuss it the earlier the better, but we are currently in other jobs and thus our answers might be slower. This will change from soon. I hope that this page will provide you a bit of information about the current status and a place to start the discussion about Wikidata.

The current status of Wikidata is:

  • We are going to start working on the technical proposal in April 2012. Some of us are already starting in March, preparing the technical work.
  • We will present previews as soon as feasible, in order to engage the community in the development.
  • We aim to have a demo or more ready for Wikimania around language links.
  • We aim to have the data available for infoboxes by December 2012 / January 2013.
  • The initial development for Wikidata is aimed to go for one year, i.e. from April 2012-March 2013.
  • We plan to install more information channels in March 2012, including mailing lists, an IRC chat, and a blog. For now, please bear with us that we did not set this all up yet -- we do have other jobs still, and are closing them, and moving to Berlin, where the development team will be.

Having said all that, we are looking for your comments and your input. But please be patient for now, we cannot promise to answer everything quickly. This will improve as the project starts for real.
