FireWiki Proposal

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Summary

[edit]
Temporary Project Logo

Today's fire and emergency services has evolved considerably. While steeped in a rich history, the new fire service tradition is one of diversity of skills and knowledge. The vision of this project is to be a portal of terms and resources for specifically the fire service. Building upon this foundation, education and learning will be the key to the future of the fire and emergency services. Upon this foundation, we begin our journey. The beauty of this community is the ability to collaborate at all levels and to share that knowledge base with everyone. In short, the success is based on the ability to share what we know and to build upon it. If you are an emergency responder or just interested in the fire service, then have a browse. We're naturally all volunteers, but there's more chance of finding what you're searching for if you ask. If you would like to see something added, please click here. If you are brand new, then take a moment to familiarize yourself with your surroundings. Much like new apparatus or equipment, familiarization builds confidence and skills. As well, the community will constantly be growing and developing, so taking time now to get one's navigational bearings will save a lot of frustration down the road. If you are an academic, instructor, or training officer, then we welcome you to edit, add and evolve the site. Your knowledge and expertise will add greatly to the integrity and morale of the community, as well as adding confidence to end users. It's also quite fun. You can add to current content or create your own. To All The most important thing, is that if you have some information you can share - then share it!

Great idea for the betterment of mankind, not of interest to the Foundation. Too specific, too narrow a focus, and entirely capable of being done by folks other than the Foundation. Sorry, but I think this is a non-starter, if you will pardon the pun.--BradPatrick 23:16, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I also believe this may more suitable for Wikia, if you wanted it somewhere other than where you currently have it. Cbrown1023 talk 01:32, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I also believe this may be more suitable for MyWikiBiz, if you wanted it somewhere other than where you currently have it. -- Thekohser 04:57, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would be interested to read it, but not enough people know enough about it to contribute regularly. The closed-subject idea staves off many users from contributing, which is the main goal of a Wiki here. Alton 04:12, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If this is basically an "education and learning" project, it should fit into Wikiversity. --JWSurf 13:43, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A sensible subject like this one, must be handle by specialists. It's not for anyone to edit and contribute. Unfortunately, against. Jtico 16:34, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I also oppose on the grounds of being too narrow. All Wikimedia projects (except perhaps Wikispecies) have area where, no matter your background or what you know, you can contribute. You can always find an encyclopedia article or definition or textbook on something you like. Since this fails that, I oppose it.--HereToHelp (talk) 00:52, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest a project about natural disaster prevention and mitigation, where everybody can contribute --Mac 06:32, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This proposal and Mac's alternate proposal both fail to fall under the scope of Wikimedia. They would be better suited for being hosted by Wikia or being hosted elsewhere (as per Cbrown1023). I suggest this proposal be rejected. Lcarsdata 18:21, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Contra: This is rather something for wikia. It is specialized on a single topic, and I think that if this gets a wikimedia wiki, then the Almeopedia (for Mark Rosenfelder's Almea), the Alternate History Wikia and many others also have to become Wikimedia wikis.--213.168.118.215 18:00, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I oppose this idea. I oppose the project as i do not believe it is worth so much trouble. In addition so many wikis are being set up these days and not many people view them or know about them like star trek wikis for example. Instead i believe this should be a wikipedia project rather than a separate wiki. Please see my point...is it worth the trouble to set up a whole new wiki on this subject!Wiki.user 09:41, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose: This seems like too narrow of a subject. Much more suitable for Wikia or someone's own server. -Chuckfromchan 19:38, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why Not? It is in my view not in conflict with our mission. (The mission of the Wikimedia Foundation is to empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop neutral educational content under a free content license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally. In collaboration with a network of chapters, the Foundation provides the essential infrastructure and an organizational framework for the support and development of multilingual wiki projects and other endeavors which serve this mission. The Foundation will make and keep the educational content from its projects available on the Internet free of charge, in perpetuity.) Dz 11:40, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
