Annual National WikiConference in India

Name of Conference - there were 3 suggestions. This discussion will be open until 1PM IST on Monday 27 June 2011 2200 hrs IST, 21 June 2011 - asking people to vote for their choice (or make other suggestions). After the name is decided, a new event logo discussion will be opened:

1. Wikimela (Suggested by Organising Committee/Working Group)

Advantage: English/Hindi Fusion

Possible issue: Mela has different meanings (could be miscontrued for a carnival!)

2. Wiki Conference India (Suggested by Organising Committee/Working Group)

Advantage: Simplicity

Possible Issue: A bit to generic.

3. WikiMania India (Suggested by Organising Committee/Working Group)

Advantage: Global image of the name

Possible Issue: Could be confused with the global meet

4. WikiUtsav

Suggested by Me (MikeLynch). I think Utsav could be better than mela (as said, could be mistaken for a carnival), and it still retains the Indian "connection". What say ppl? Lynch7 07:15, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

5. WikiBharati

Suggested by Me (Sudhanwa_j). I think Utsav gives sense more of just celebrations. mela gives a feel of just fun/games/get-together. (as said, could be mistaken for a carnival), Bharati is completely in the Indian context and acceptable term from all parts of the country. It does not give any fun/carnival kind of context but gives more serious and intellectual context. What you say ? Sudhanwa 00:10, 21 June 2011 (IST)

  3. danese 18:50, 20 June 2011 (UTC) I like Wikimela because its uniquely Indian. I might CamelCase the Mela, though...Reply
  4. Bishdatta 04:47, 21 June 2011 (UTC) Very Indian, like Wikipatrika.Reply
  5. This sounds much more exciting and provides a broader width of possible activities than any of the other name suggestions. It also gives us freedom from sticking to just people talking from a pedestal format of things :).
  6. I like the fusion. Wikimela India sounds a little better though. AroundTheGlobe 05:08, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
  7. mela is closer to mania, and comes closer to the informal and p2p mode of our meetings. It reflects the spirit of the commons. Also wikiMela as a camelCase is better, without a capital 'w'. --Nagarjunag 05:18, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
  8. I completely support Nagarjunag in his views and would like to add even the domain is available both .com and .in. More importantly it is easy on the ears will surely help in making a good calligraphy in Devanagari script (Hindi, Marathi) विकिमेला and also will be easy the regional papers to carry the news.Mokshjuneja 15:09, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

  9. I Support Would be a good time to come up with standards: like WikiConference (country name) for the National Conference. WikiMania for the International/Global Meet and within India use locally understood names appropriately to brand events like Utsav for the After Conference Party..or Mela for Wiki community meets.

  1. This is too generic, please avoid it!! Sounds very un-creative!Mokshjuneja 15:04, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
  2. Oppose Oppose - Two potential issues. a) Wiki and Wikipedia/Wikimedia are not synonymous. The conference is for Wikimedia projects and not any wiki site The name suggests that all Wiki projects are up for discussion. b) Foo Camps and unconferences are sometimes loosely called wiki conferences. --Sbohra 15:10, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

  1. Oppose OpposeThis would prob. be opposed by a lot of people outside. There is no point in conflating our conference with Wikimania, something the Mumbai team does plan on bidding for already. Theo10011 13:51, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
  2. Oppose Strong oppose Like Theo, I think it would be a very bad idea to conflate Wikimania and a country's WikiConference. It would cause confusion and would probably not go over too well with the Wikimania organizers and the extended community. There's an unspoken agreement that "Wikimania" is just for the global international conference. Cbrown1023 talk 15:06, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
  3. Oppose Strong oppose Above reasons -- Tinu Cherian - 01:05, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
  4. Oppose Strong oppose Same above mentioned reasons. --Surya Prakash.S.A. 05:00, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
  5. Oppose Strong oppose - Above reasons. We cannot unilaterally decide. Even if they were to cordially agree, it will take up too much time.--Sbohra 11:49, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

  1. Support Support I think we need a name unique for India. This works best. — Nearly Headless Nick {C} 03:03, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
  2. Support Support Prefer the connotation of festival/celebration to wikimela (my 2nd preference). Considering its around Diwali time, the name is apt. People might have voted before this option was added. The OC might want to consider a quick vote between these two options if wikimela comes first --Sbohra 11:56, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
