Advice requested[edit]

Hello. I was wondering what you think the best next step is for the Latvian Wikipedia and climate denial. One of the local admins seems to be going against local consensus on talk to promote climate denial (to be fair, not that much input to properly assess consensus). The discussion is now at the point where he has proposed to replace old climate myths with more modern climate myths. At 51 pageviews / day, I'm not quite willing to let this go yet. Femke (talk) 12:06, 31 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

A second admin has deleted significant denial. Let's wait how this plays out. Femke (talk) 19:09, 31 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Indeed. Optimally these issues would be decided by local consensus, which hopefully would side with reliable sources rather than personal opinions. Vermont (talk) 01:08, 1 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

User:Maincomb[edit]

Thx for blocking my user disk. Please see also here (where apparently no one is working ;-)). The request-for-unblocking-path the user mentioned is correct, but it is only one of at least two ways to go for it; there is another one, but his own disk was blocked. But, unblocking the account is highly unprobably since this is a sock of sock of ... so he is exclusively trolling, --He3nry (talk) 07:25, 11 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Interesting. Thanks for letting me know. Vermont (talk) 01:56, 12 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Global IP block exemption denied[edit]

At Steward_requests/Global_permissions#Global_IP_block_exempt_for_MuDavid (which I can’t edit today, even though I’m logged in and have had an account for many years) you say, “That IP is blocked locally on the English Wikipedia, not globally”. Yesterday, though, I was blocked on the Vietnamese Wiktionary, where I often edit, and I tried the Portuguese Wikipedia and I was blocked there as well. They message that appeared said I’d been blocked globally by User:Tks4Fish. You say I was dreaming? MuDavid (talk) 02:39, 1 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

In that case it is likely a global block, but it would not be for the IP that you listed. Please copy or screenshot the block message, next time you see it, and send it to stewards@wikimedia.org with a note about your gIPBE request. Or, if you are comfortable doing so, pasting the listed IP (in the global block message) here or on the request. Vermont (talk) 02:08, 2 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Block users[edit]

Hey Vermont. Sorry to bother you. These two user names are vandalizing around meta: User:With all the men's horses, User:Leopardspots27. I am not sure how block requests work here. I saw you are online. Could you please handle this? Thanks. --Joalpe (talk) 23:35, 15 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Done, thanks! In the future you can request on Meta:RFH, but here works too. Best, Vermont 🐿️ (talk) 23:42, 15 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

m-w CU?[edit]

Hi Vermont, I was thinking of running for local checkuser, not sure if there is enough work to require more local users right now - any thoughts on this? Best regards, — xaosflux Talk 20:44, 27 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hm. Unsure if we *need* another CU per se, but you're certainly a trusted user and there are many times when additional CUs would be helpful, as well as non-Steward CUs. Do you want to discuss this more over email? Vermont 🐿️ (talk) 00:54, 30 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I see someone else is running right now, so will probably hold of for a bit - I think I could pass community muster but don't want to just have a hat to not make use of. Thank you for the reply! — xaosflux Talk 09:26, 30 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Unanswered request for bot flag[edit]

Hi, I've made a request for a bot flag on Steward requests/Bot status but it's waiting with no action from stewards for more than a week. Would you please take a look? Thanks a lot! روزبه (talk) 11:07, 23 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hm. I'll pass this along, bot status is not something I'm particularly familiar with so I'm not comfortable making the action myself. Thanks for the message! Vermont 🐿️ (talk) 14:29, 23 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much! روزبه (talk) 00:39, 24 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Email sent from E.Imanoff[edit]

First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to my esteemed colleagues who took their precious time and expressed their opinion on my withdrawal from the Global Block, so I decided to write here to convey my request to a colleague who can open my block. Dear Vermont, please unblock per all this. Cheers!

Generally speaking, using an IP to evade a lock is not okay. However, considering the circumstances (lack of abuse with the IP, simply discussing here) I don't think it's beneficial to act on it.
Please email stewards(_AT_)wikimedia.org with your appeal, and if you can cc me on that (vermont(_AT_)vtwp.org). Considering past socking, I'm not comfortable unlocking without a strict one-account restriction. Vermont 🐿️ (talk) 17:36, 22 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
I sent it from my official email address as you said. I promise I'll take this seriously.

Please gblock[edit]

Please, please, please globally block 92.40.170.0/19, I already reported them to SRG a week or two ago, but I just can't keep up with their vandalism. – Ilovemydoodle (talk) 05:02, 2 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Why[edit]

Why did you say in Requests for comment/Crimean Tatar coverage on ruwiki that there was " No indication that the Russian Wikipedia's content dispute procedures are incapable of handling this"? I listed many examples of Russian Wikipedia's content dispute procedures NOT handling severe issues in a competent manner? Heck, the person who accused the Mubarek zone project of being a hoax invented by Crimean Tatars hasn't received so much as a demerit/talkpage warning against making such absurd accusations about minorities. The deletion nomination that insisted Yaliboylu Crimean Tatars weren't real sat up for YEARS and wasn't handled until the request for comment began to receive significant attention (surely to save face from having not addressed the problem). It is abundandtly clear that administration on Russian Wikipedia is incapable of handling the issue at best (when they're not actively condoning and enabling it). Do you not see a problem that there is no ban on attack pages? And that the entire Russian wikimedia commenity's response was to not be like "Ok, we have an issue here, and we'll try to do better. We'll go for half of the suggestions listed" but rather to make the discussion entirely about me (the ad hominem approach) and lobby for me to be banned on ruwiki for "threatening" Russian Wikipedia and "insulting" other users by using the word "chuavanist" to describe the attitudes reflected? What will you have to say when an article about Crimean Tats (a branch of the CT nation) or Decree 493 is created and then immediatly nominated for deletion with the same absurd claims attacking the Crimean Tatar people, and no admin immediatly gives a stern warning? Do keep in mind that the few non-Russian contributers agreed with the idea that there was indeed a problem on ruwiki going on.--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 17:57, 2 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
