This is the page to propose page moves that might be controversial. These should be listed for seven days and implemented if there is no opposition. Any language may be used on this page, although English is the most common. Users who wish to use this place should place {{ move }} on the page in question to alert other users, which adds the page to Category:proposed page moves.

[edit] Help:ParserFunctions → Extension:ParserFunctions→ MW:Extension:ParserFunctions
The material in Help:ParserFunctions is associated with the ParserFunctions extension. I suggest it be renamed, and any general help content within the article moved to Help:Parser_function. Ultimately the new article needs to be moved to MediaWiki. The MediaWiki page is currrently an incorrect redirect aswell, see MW:Extension:ParserFunctions. If this article does get moved the php code within the extension also needs updating so that Special:Version associates to the new article location. --Zven 20:44, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
- Support move --Jonathan Kovaciny 15:46, 5 October 2007 (UTC)
- Support move Ext:ParserFunctions docs have become a confusing jumble both here and on mediawiki.org --Nad 23:58, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- Not a good idea--this is one of the most frequently needed cite help pages in discussing templates with those unfamiliar with their innards. While I have no problem with putting the main page in mediawiki (assuming it's maintained as Patrick has done this here), there should be care taken to leave a forwarding redirect at the least, or a replacement article in less technical terms. While the process of mirroring help pages to the Enwikipedia has "slacked off", this particular page is cited fairly often in template help there. I'd be surprised if that weren't the case for other sisters as well. // FrankB 23:31, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

- Comment-- The problem I have is that this article is an Extension called 'ParserFunctions' with downloadable code, not a general help article on parser functions use. I agree it should contain help details for the parser functions that the extension enables, so I think so at the very least information should be split, because there should be an extension called MW:Extension:ParserFunctions on http://www.mediaWiki.org --Zven 20:44, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

- Hmmm, I agree actually, with a soft redirect. Then, if it were moved to medaiwiki.org., {{MovedToMediaWiki}} would be used anyway, which is just as good. --Anonymous DissidentTalk 21:36, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

- Move to MediaWiki --Anonymous DissidentTalk 07:24, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- Comment -- Had this vote not been started, the page would have 'eventually' been moved to MW.org anyway, as the content is definitely wanted there. The question is whether (a) it should be moved somewhere else on meta in the meantime and (b) whether to keep a version of this page on meta after the move. --HappyDog 14:02, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose -- I think it is better to integrate this software into MediaWiki. In the meantime we can also keep the documentation integrated (on a separate page but not a separate namespace or site), as long as there are the necessary instructions for installing it, of course; there are already links from the mw site, so people can find the page: mw:Extension:ParserFunctions and mw:Category:Parser function extensions.--Patrick (talk) 11:16, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
-
- Even if it's integrated into MediaWiki proper, so that it's no longer an extension, it should still be documented on MediaWiki, not on Meta. Jonathan Kovaciny 14:20, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

- Even if the ParserFunctions is integrated into a future version of MediaWiki then the extension still needs to be documented and available at MW:Extension:ParserFunctions for previous releases of MediaWiki up to the integration into the core software. Really the debate here is what should the namespace for this article be Extension: or Help:? As it is an extension I believe it should be Extension: with documentation of its usage, however as it is a high profile extension I suggest there should be a fork of the article to continue documenting the usage of this extension in a Help: namespace on Meta.

- Support move to "Extension:ParserFunctions", and support moving to MW.org. Anthøny 22:47, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
- Strong Support and Split page, all extension downloads should be on MediaWiki, and the page is much to large, installation and the Manual on how to use them should be separate. PatPeter 03:48, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- Why should wikimedia project users search any user documentation on MediaWiki site? They shall be confused. Meta should accommodate the common user help for all wikimedia projects.--Huck 15:43, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
- Wait I am not completely understanding you, what do you mean? I am saying to move the actual files to MediaWiki, and probably keep most of the help here. PatPeter 16:01, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
- Against (rather) - pls. make a clear and reasonable policy what should be documented where first. Plus ensure that such policy is really followed.
- Page named Help:Parser_function would be a bit misleading that it contains all parsing rules of wikimedia projects what is of course incorrect.
- Current page Help:Parser_function is already long enough and cannot accommodate all the necessary details from Help:ParserFunctions.
- It is viable to have a link from META connecting the set of documented features with particular extension which provides them. It implies:
- that these features are not part of the core MediaWiki parser,
- extensions documented on META are part of current wikimedia projects, ie.:
- they have a relatively certain future and
- they are necessary when you copy the content (esp. templates) to your own wiki.
- MediaWiki documentation is relatively poor now. Usualy there is only a short hint how to download it and incorporate it into your configuration, but not the user documentation normally. I suppose that this is the result of the strategy that wikimedia projects are the major product and MediaWiki is only a by-product.
This is why I call for a strategy first. Suggested proposal leads to the state where nearly all user documentation is DUPLICATED and maintained separately both on META and MediaWiki. For me it sounds reasonable to have and maintain only one place of user feature documentation and this is rather META than MediaWiki.org at the current state of chaos.--Huck 15:43, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
Can we have a decision on this soon please, most appear in favour of moving some of the content. Help:ParserFunctions is currently a help page for a specific extension MW:Extension:ParserFunction which may be incorporated into the MediaWiki code base in the future, not how to use parser functions in general. The details of installation and brief usage should be on MediaWiki. If the help associated with the extension is high profile then details should be documented on Meta. --Zven 01:09, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- I agree completely with Zven. PatPeter 16:01, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
- Also what would we do with Extension:Parser function extensions? PatPeter 16:15, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Info-en guide → OTRS/Info-en_guide
I propose this move because (what seems to be) all other pages regarding the OTRS is under the OTRS mainpage. --Bensin 13:57, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
- Agree with subbing, but I suggest lowercase OTRS/info-en guide instead - like most of Category:OTRS. Also Info-en mission → OTRS/info-en mission, and to get rid of the 3 remaining Uppies: OTRS/Article monitoring → OTRS/article monitoring, OTRS/Mailing list → OTRS/mailing list, and OTRS/Merge function → OTRS/merge function. -- Jeandré, 2007-08-18t09:03z
- Agree with Jeandré. Cbrown1023 talk 13:31, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
- Agree – standardisation is, in this case, a good thing. Anthøny 18:22, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] MediaWiki FAQ → MW:FAQ
I propose we move the MediaWiki FAQ to the MediaWiki wiki. This page is relevant to local installations of MediaWiki, not Wikimedia Foundation wikis. // Pathoschild (talk) 12:05, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
- Support and suggest similar for all pages specifically about Mediawiki (the latter page has not yet been updated following the release of version 1.6) so as to keep them more up-to-date. HTH HAND —Phil | Talk 12:56, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
- (comment) Please see Meta:MetaProject_to_transfer_content_to_MediaWiki.org. --HappyDog 17:43, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
Looks like that move went ahead. I support it, but lets try not to lose lots of valuable information. See my comment here. Did you move/merge, or just delete?? -- Harry Wood 12:17, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
- The page on MediaWiki is licensed under the public domain, so it is not possible to simply move/merge content from meta. A lot of the early work was done by mw:User talk:RobChurch so you may want to ask him what his approach was - he may be able to give you an idea about how much information was lost. The short answer though is have a look and see if anything is missing, and if so write it! You are not allowed to simply copy content from meta though due to incompatible licences.
- It occurs to me that the Help namespace is ultimately designed to be included in distributions of MW as help for users. With this in mind, installation/config/coding issues are not really relevant in mw:Help:FAQ, so perhaps we need a new page for this kind of thing (mw:Manual:FAQ or would that be too confusing?). If so, it should be in the Manual: namespace, and will be under GFDL, so direct copying from meta would be allowed. --HappyDog 20:28, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
Yeah the above comments were written back in July 06 and are now out-of-date for two reasons.
Firstly the move which went ahead, was since undone (which doesn't surprise me since it seems it involved throwing away a lot of information!)
Secondly some people were confused about the license status of MediaWiki.org back then. This has since been clarified. Most content on mediawiki org is licensed GFDL (same as here). This includes mw:Manual:FAQ and everything under the 'Manual' namespace there. There is one relatively small area of that wiki which is realeased as Public Domain (and thus not compatible with the license here), but legally speaking there is nothing to stop us doing a wholesale move of everything from this FAQ onto mw:Manual:FAQ. This has since been made a lot more clear, with a different background design for the small public domain area of mediawiki.org, so hopefully there's no more confusion about licenses.
With the question of what we can do cleared up... there's still a question of what we should do, to rationalise this documentation situation. As I said before I am actually in favour of moving this page over the MediaWiki.org eventually. But it would be nice to give it a re-write and/or split out into seperate pages without losing any chunks of information. This is a tricky job. And what with all the interlinking, this isn't really the easiest place to start in our Meta:MetaProject to transfer content to MediaWiki.org
