Wikimedia District of Columbia
Official Wikimedia DC website: wikimediadc.org
Wikimedia District of Columbia is the second official Wikimedia chapter organized within the United States, covering the national capital region including the District of Columbia and the states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. The chapter was incorporated as the Wiki Society of Washington, DC Inc. in the District of Columbia on May 7, 2011, and it was recognized as a chapter on September 12, 2011. Per the Bylaws, the objects of Wikimedia DC "shall be the advancement of general knowledge, and the collection and development of educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and the dissemination of it effectively and globally."
Wikimedia DC is uniquely situated to support the Wikimedia movement. Being located in the capitol region of the United States, the chapter engages in free content promotion, outreach and partnership efforts with governmental organizations, universities, and museums, many of which have large amounts of useful public domain content readily available, or organizations willing to contribute under another free license.
The official Bylaws are published on the Wikimedia DC website; an additional copy is posted on Meta under /Bylaws. The Bylaws were approved by resolution of the Chapters Committee on August 22, 2011.
