Annual report of civic association Wikimedians of Slovakia User Group (WMSK)

Annual General Meeting[edit]

The Annual General Meeting took place on Saturday, 29 January 2022 beginning at 16:00 through the online platform Zoom. 5 members took part (out of 6) which meant that the AGM reached quorum. The AGM approved a change in the by-laws that enabled the change of the address of the seat of the organization. The possibility to organize online AGMs, through the use of picture and voice transmission, was explicitly added; the so-called "per rollam" way of voting was approved and an option to adjust membership fees was changed. The members of the AGM also agreed with the edits of the English version of the 2018 report, made by the Affiliations Committee in connection with the on-going disagreement between Michal Matúšov and the User Group. The annual report for 2021 was discussed, the AGM recommended additions to be made. The annual plan for 2022 was discussed and approved.

Organizational[edit]

During the 2022 calendar year we continued in consolidating our internal processes and communciation. We continued our online meetings approximately twice per week. For the first time we paid a person to do some of the administrative and organizational work, which contributed to the professionalization of the organization.

Activities of the User Group[edit]

The User Group organized and coorganized the following projects during 2022:

Wikimedia CEE Spring 2022[edit]

In 2022 WMSK organized the 4th Slovak round of the international competition Wikimedia CEE Spring 2022. The goal of the competition was to increase the quality and number of articles about Central and Eastern Europe on Wikipedia. During the running of the competition, between 21 March and 31 May 2021, 6 editors took part. They created 47 articles, 44 of those were accepted according to the rules of the competition. Internationally, Slovak Wikipedia placed 22nd out of 24 projects. We supported this round of competition only in a technical way and there were no prizes for participants or winners.

WikiGap 2022[edit]

The second WikiGap event in Slovakia took place on 7 May 2022. It was organized online and in person in cooperation with the Embassy of Sweden in Vienna and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Bratislava, with the feminist organization Aspekt and the University Library in Bratislava. The outcome is (as of 10 May 2022):

  • 26 new articles,
  • 47 edited articles,
  • 171 edits total,
  • 14 editors,
  • cca 94,5 kB added text.

Some articles were later deleted, however, due to notability or lack of references or due to being unfinished. In spite of that, the event can be considered a success judging by the number of edits and the the number of participants. Edits took place not only on Slovak Wikipedia but also on Swedish and Arabic Wikipedia as well as Wikidata. We thank our partner organizations for taking part in the project. Matej Grochal was the lead organizer.

Wikipedia Asian Month[edit]

The fifth annual round of the Wikipedia Asian Month took place on Slovak Wikipedia. This international competition focuses on the improvement of content about Asia. We again worked with our partner organization, Wikimedia Taiwan, by following up on last year's cooperation by editing together and getting to know each other. Wikipedia Asian Month itself took place between 15 November and 31 December 2022.

Three editors and 10 new articles took part in the internation part, two more editors and four articles took part in the Taiwanese part othe competition. Dávid Štefan was the lead organizer.

International Cooperation[edit]

The chair of the organization, Matej Grochal, participated in the 2022 Wikimania during August 2022 (online) and the Wikimedia Summit 2022 in September 2022 (online). He also represented the organization at the Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2022 (in person in Ohrid, North Macedonia), while also actively working on contacts with (Wikimedia Česká republika, Wikimedia Austria, Wikimedia Hungary).

Cooperation with other organizations[edit]

We cooperated with several organizations with similar goals throughout the year: with the Swedish and Dutch embassies and Záujmové združenie žien Aspekt and University Library in Bratislava on the WikiGap 2022 project.

We prepared a project for seniors in cooperation with Mikuláš Kováč Public Library in Banskej Bystrici. The project will take place during 2023.
