Logo discussions

We've got our winning logo! Please help us to find a suitable colour. The current one (blue) is already used for other logos of sisterprojects.

Please upload new images with a resolution of 1000×900px (like the original [1]). You can also upload a smaller version for preview, but then you must be able to upload a full resolution later.

It is recommend to upload a vector-format (".svg"), so other users can change it easier. (Note: If you see the blue logo linked above only in a size smaller than 1000×900px, try opening my preferences, click on the "Files" tab, and increase the value "Limit images on image description pages to" to "1280×1024px". You need a Commons user account in order to perform this action.)

Proceedings

Now we've got enough logos for conducting at least two more rounds of voting. Since everybody agrees that's not a good idea, I suggest we do a quick informal vote here on which three or four color options we would like to get an election about, and then start it? Or are there any other ideas about how to proceed? At the moment, the process seems to me to be stuck, so suggestions welcome. Hardern 10:09, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Suggestion to maybe arrive at a quick decision: We combine nominations and elections. I just collected all the logos at the bottom of the page and picked the one which seemed to have the favourite. If someone prefers another one, please move it to the nomination section and add your support vote there (but please don't do this just for the sake of voting on different variants but only if you do really prefer this variant). --Elian 01:14, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
Is there any particular reason why you removed my version (#13) from the page? —David Levy 03:39, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
No, I just missed it when I colllected all the pictures. --Elian 11:32, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

Erm, could we agree to only give one vote per person? Otherwise we will have a pretty mess as soon as people start to add a decent contra to all the logos they don't like, just to outweigh the multiple pros those recieved. Thanks! Hardern 21:55, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
PS: What's the contras good for anyway? In the end it's the number of pros a logo got what counts, or? Hardern 21:56, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

This is merely a preliminary discussion. At this stage, it's unreasonable to expect people to vote only for one favorite (especially as new candidates are still being added). Given the fact that people can express approval of however many variants they like, it also makes sense for people to indicate which ones they dislike. —David Levy 23:15, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Is it absolutely too late for submissions? I made a couple... one with just colour... and another couple which I think were a bit outside of the box... Where would I go to submit them if I can?

As Hillgentleman suggested in talk page, what do you think of voting for keeping or not the SFX/eye-candy effects on the logo (blue and grey gradient espacialy). Meithal 19:22, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Oppose: To me, this is similar to saying "I don't think we should use any colours other than blue and yellow"! It solely depends on how the "eye-candy" is used; thus, I am completely against this suggestion. Jellocube27 15:09, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

  • Contra this is kinda boring 72.218.118.6 02:00, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

  • Pro the original is the best.--Hillgentleman 11:43, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Pro it's the best with the UNICEF color, it's a very good symbol. Sainte-Rose 16:35, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Pro - I agree that the original color is the best, if we are going to go with one color. (I would also like to see -- and would create if I had the skill with graphics -- more ways to do 2 color variants (such as the cross-bars above and below the pillars the same color as the globe) and a variant that is done in only black and/or grey outlines with whitespace (inverting the globe and having the collums empty). Reswik 17:02, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Pro. We might be better off switching to a different shade (to reduce the degree of similarity to some of the sister project logos), but I support this version over all attempts to eliminate the globe's blue coloring (which probably was a factor behind much of the support that the logo received). The globe is supposed to represent the planet Earth, and that symbolism is lost when a different color is used. —David Levy 17:29, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

We are voting for our logo, and not for the strip of colour in the scheme of the marketing guy Elian.---Hillgentleman 10:16, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
True, but it wouldn't hurt to have a logo of a convenient color, would it? And I don't think that this logo is so problematically unfit for its place in the top-left corner as much as you think. --朝彦 (Asahiko) 12:14, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
1. Convenient to whom? Morning Elite, let me ask you, do you consider the convinience of Elian more important than the comfort of the thousands of users? Have you ever thought that it may not fit in the wikiversity page itself? Has anybody?---Hillgentleman 12:57, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
2. It will become the only red thing on the whole page, after all red links are gone. It sticks out as a sore thumb.Hillgentleman
Stay cool, Hillgentleman, and you've got only half of my name right -- it would be better for both of us if you would just call me by my proper name. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I haven't considered how this logo looks on the actual page, and to prove it I've just made a preview and uploaded it here. I don't think that it's so bad. You'd obviously disagree, but I'm fairly certain that the "thousands of users" wouldn't care about logo color as much as you are doing right now. That aside, I'm not saying that blue sucks or anything of the sort; as a matter of fact, I like the original blue in itself, but given the circumstances, I chose to support some other color. It's just that you and I place slightly different priorities to this matter, so calm down, will you? And let's hear what others feel about how this red logo would fit in within the page. To others: Please let us hear how you feel about how the pages would look like with this logo in action. --朝彦 (Asahiko) 13:52, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
朝彦, Thank you for your answers. I am sorry that I cannot type Chinese character on this computer. Please tell me how you interpret your name. I am calm - please do not be unsettled by sharp questions.--Hillgentleman 23:14, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Hmm, maybe it was I who wasn't cool enough. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, no offense :-) My name's more like a proper noun and it would be better if you'd just type Asahiko if you have difficulties. (Looking at Wiktionary I was surprised to find that the character 彦 might mean that way. In Japan the character is only used occasionaly as a suffix on male names.) --朝彦 (Asahiko) 00:16, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

  • Pro Colors are great ! Shapsed 21:00, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Pro-- Very nice color combination - it is lovely the way the blue globe (as it looks from space) stands out. This is the only version which continues the winning shade of blue in the original logo. That soft but vibrant blue color perhaps helped this logo win. Perhaps we should stick with it for the globe. This silver for the base (or perhaps a shade variation) speak of both dignity and industry. The connotations of the colors in the combination of soft electric blue (vibrant life) and steel-silver (elegant productivity) evoke a kind of integral imagination that would be helpful and inspiring for Wikiversity & Wikimedia. -- Reswik 09:39, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Contra (a little) #13 and : The academic pillars should not be separated from the world.--Hillgentleman 09:46, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
  • They are not separate, but, rather, they are complementary and vitally so. See comment just above. Reswik 09:50, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
  • The pillars and the world are separated by their colours. Do you want to imply that the world is blue and the academia is grey? I would not mind bluemetallica because one colour blends into another. I mind this one.--Hillgentleman 10:10, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
  • The colors are in one logo, together as one structure. The interpretation of complementarity can be explained in a blurb somewhere. We can also further revise the design to suggest greater integration by including blue in the crossbars above and below the pillars. I'd like to see that variation -- but I don't have the skill with graphics to create variations (or time to learn that just now). --Reswik 17:06, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
  • The intended connotation is that two entities that ordinarily are separate (a learning institution and the entire world) have joined together. —David Levy 17:29, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
  • I do not think they are separate in the first place.---Hillgentleman 05:36, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

  • Huh?! That makes absolutely no sense. —David Levy 16:46, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
  • Pro (my attempt). The globe's blue coloring is a very important element, and it probably was a factor behind much of the support that the logo received. The globe is supposed to represent the planet Earth, and that symbolism is lost when a different color is used. If the idea of using two separate colors is widely opposed, we should instead switch to a different shade of blue that reduces the degree of similarity to some of the sister project logos (the reason behind the proposed color change). Please see my attempt (a greenish shade of blue) below. —David Levy 17:29, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Hey David. :) This variant popped in my head while eating breakfast (granolla of course). Could you possibly create a version that has vibrant but rich earthy green crossbars above and below the pillars? That would make 3 colors in the design: blue for earth, green for crossbars (both the roof and floor), and grey/silver for the collumns. (Would it take much time for you to give a try at making black outline version(s) with whitespace, as described in my comment in the top original option?) --Reswik 17:38, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi! I'm a novice, but I'll attempt to implement your ideas. —David Levy 17:53, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
I experimented with your outline/whitespace idea. I wasn't terribly successful, but it led me to create a new blue/silver version (which I just added directly below). This evolved from the inverted globe portion. —David Levy 20:40, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks very much for experimenting with this. I think Hillgentleman is correct: In outline form, the globe looks like a cage. That try might be softened up by hollowing out the collums and using more or different colors but the connotation would probably still remain. So, my remaining thought would be to try the color alteration on the horizontal crossbars: to green, tan or brown. I think that could (much) reduce the sense that the bottom structure is separate (and monolithic). --Reswik 16:13, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Okay, I'll give that a try (though I suspect that those who object to the use of two colors might object even more strongly to the use of three). If we do end up sticking with a single color, I believe that something along the lines of my greenish blue attempt would be our best bet; it would retain the "Earth" connotation, while moving away from the shades of blue used in sister project logos. Do you have any thoughts on that? —David Levy 17:23, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
I very much agree that some shade of blue is the best color for the globe. I like the idea of continuing to work with exploring various ways to color the horizontal lines and collumns. --Reswik 01:56, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Is this what you had in mind? I also created several other variants and compiled all of my attempts. —David Levy 19:55, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Yes, that is exactly the idea. Thanks again very much. I wish I could play with creating other color variants, such as: brown for the base and tan/beige for the collums (or vice-versa); an olive green/brown-earth-tone variant; a dark tan-beige/light tan variant; etc. There are rich possiblities in the three color scheme alternative I think. Do you have any more time to play with this? We could even propose it as a policy to varry the base/collumn colors over time (keeping the globe the same) on the Wikiversity main page. I copied the 3-color variant to a section below this. It seemed best for the 3-color option to be in separate nomination space. Do you agree? I think other 3-color options could be put there, if they get created. --Reswik 01:56, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
1. Given the sheer quantity of variants already created, I'd like to wait for additional feedback before adding any more. —David Levy 02:44, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
The reason for more options is that, to my eyes, the hues of blue are just a tad clashing -- though they are almost there. It is a very good draft. (Copying this from option H below...) "Ps. I think the hues of blue in this version could be adjusted just a tad to be more complimentary, while remaining distinct." -- Reswik 04:47, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Keep in mind that different displays produce different colors. I don't know how accurate my LCD is, but the precise hues can be adjusted later if people like the idea. —David Levy 05:07, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
I think it is more that there is a clash between the new blue-green hue and the original Cerulean? hue. (For future reference for this version, check out complementary colors at the bottom of this page: w:Cyan) While i like the approach of this version, I'm glad that M below has other 3-color options that develop the idea further -- people aren't likely to miss that there are a lot of options with this 3-color approach. --Reswik 01:39, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
2. I don't think that a variable-color logo would comply with the Wikimedia visual identity guidelines. —David Levy 02:44, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
I meant just to vary the logo design on the Wikiversity front page, not on the sister projects. There could be a default logo - with ocassional variations, sort of like what Google does with its logo on various holidays - but in the WV case not necessarilly tied to holidays. -- Reswik 04:47, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
I understand what you mean, but I think that the Foundation wants its projects to maintain consistent logos. —David Levy 05:07, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
I wonder if they would really object to having a stable logo which has some creative time-limited replacements/variations over time. If so, I think it is too stodgey of an approach. --Reswik 01:39, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
3. I'm very pleased with how your idea turned out, and I agree with the manner in which you listed it. —David Levy 02:44, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
I'm glad we're on same page on liking this. It is quite good, though needing adjustment in hue, perhaps. I think the 3-color approach can be refined into some options that are quite potent, meaningful and attractive. -- Reswik 04:47, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
  • I have a naive question- The original logo already has grey in the word WIKIVERSITY. Why must we introduce grey into the columns?--Hillgentleman 00:01, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
The idea is not to increase the amount of grey (and you'll notice that I changed the lettering to black), but to reduce the amount of blue. The reason behind the proposed color change is that the logo has been deemed too similar in color to the logos of several sister projects. If we change the other elements to different colors/shades, we probably could keep the original blue shade for the globe (because it would no longer predominate). —David Levy 00:17, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Wait. I thought the colour-coding scheme was the issue. Do you think that the blue wikiversity logo is similar to others? I do not.--Hillgentleman 01:10, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
Only the color/shade is similar, and that's why the change was proposed. —David Levy 01:38, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
