Report for the 1lib1ref Nigeria Caampaign 2023[edit]

Camapign[edit]

We launched the 1lib1ref campaign in 2023 on June 1st and ended on June 30th. In total, we had a total of 1285 revisions on 375 pages by 26 users for the campaign. At a time we had some disruption on the English Wikipedia and had to halt it for a while until all was fixed. We fixed it by suspending the campaigning and having another training exercise. The winners fromthe overall camapign are:

  • Marvelous101
  • Africanlibrarian
  • Aderiqiezo

Outreach Capacity Building[edit]

We visited the Federal University of Technology Akure Library for the Nigerian Library Conference 2023 for an outreach 1lib1ref event.

We had 27 librarians in attendance, representing seven different institutions. Some were unable to attend due to their delayed arrival. The event took place at the ICT center of the Albert Ilomade Library, FUTA.

The program commenced at approximately 4:10 pm on Sunday, July 3rd, with an initial gathering of around 15 participants, anticipating others joining later.

We swiftly delved into the introduction of the Wikimedia concept, noting that 95% of the attendees still needed to contribute to the project. Our presentation utilized slides to convey the information. Following the presentation, we initiated a hands-on session, where we provided practical guidance on using citation hunt. The session was highly interactive, with enthusiastic participation from all attendees, who began actively contributing.

After the comprehensive training, we presented a collection of diverse souvenirs to the University librarian, who graciously expressed appreciation and pledged future support for collaborative efforts.

Additionally, we distributed shirts, flash drives, and umbrellas to contributors who had made at least one contribution. Some could not collect these items due to the limited supply, but all expressed gratitude to Wikimedia Nigeria.

What worked exceptionally well[edit]

  • A strong grasp of the Wikimedia projects was evident among all participants.
  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to contribute were prevalent, with invitations extended for further training at their respective institutions.
  • The consistent presence of the school's University librarian throughout the program motivated the participants.
  • The school University librarian was present all through the program.
  • Some made active contributions to Wikipedia.

What did not work so well:[edit]

  • It was difficult supervising what they were doing as I was the only one.
  • Many participants used their mobile phones, which caused difficulties for some.
  • The program had time constraints, necessitating an early conclusion.
  • Experienced difficulty in the creation of accounts.

Here is the dashboard here. More important; the program was really useful and created more future collaborations for us at Wikimedia Nigeria as the participants were all grateful.
