Community Wishlist Survey 2017/Archive/Generate reference from ISBN
Generate reference from ISBN
- Problem: To add references of books manually is way too long and at the same time it may be automatized
- Who would benefit: Editors, having more time to edit, Wikipedia recieving more bites
- Proposed solution: Write a code, which will be taking data from ISBN, ČSN (Older Czech code) and other national databases and generation reference. User will just have to add e.g. page from, which it is cited.
- More comments: I know, there is a bug about this. The last news are the our developers is waiting to the database owners. But I wonder, weather there is just one database. Google is able to get such data, so why Wikipedia not. More over there might be other local databases - e.g. Czech used before the switch to ISBN in 1990s ČSN. Ask User:Mormegil, who knows about it and is able to tell you weather, the database is ready to use.

Discussion[edit]
Have you tried a RefToolbar gadget? It can fill in the pre-defined template form from given ISBN, URL, DOI or PMID, if the pertinent information is available. --Vachovec1 (talk) 18:50, 12 November 2017 (UTC)
- Juandev, so you actually mean from other services similar to ISBN - this one's already been working in the visual and 2017 wikitext editors, since last May. Elitre (WMF) (talk) 15:13, 13 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Juandev: Hi, please see comments above. If you don't object (and also rewrite this proposal to make it clearer), then I'll archive this proposal in 24 hours. Thanks! Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 19:18, 20 November 2017 (UTC)
- Really? Its not working to me on cs.wp. What about other systems like ČSN?--Juandev (talk) 12:24, 27 November 2017 (UTC)
- Well, I dont see that gadget available on cs.wp. I thought these wishes are for everybody. Not just for en.wp.--Juandev (talk) 12:27, 27 November 2017 (UTC)
