What languages do you speak, and at what fluency level? (Please include your English proficiency.) English Fluency level = 90% , Setswana Fluency level 90 %, Afrikaans Fluency Level 70%
What region(s) of the world do you have experience with, and what kind of experience do you have? (“Experience” can mean you have lived or worked there or are currently living or working there; you’re familiar with the culture and language; etc.) South Africa. I was born in South Africa and have stayed here from birth. I've travelled around the country and most neighbouring countries including Lesotho, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia and Mozambique. As a result, I'm mainly involved in SA culture and am well versed in 9 of the 11 Official languages and cultures and have learned to expose and immerse myself in other cultures as well.
What Wikimedia project(s) do you actively edit? And in what language(s)? I mostly edit Wikiquote (#shesaid), the main Wikipedia articles, mainly articles on South African Libraries, places and cultures and have recently started translating pages on Wiki Translate from English to Setswana
What affiliate(s) are you actively involved with? In what capacity are you involved? Do you serve in a leadership role or have you in the past? Wikimedia ZA. I have previous been involved in an edit-a-thon at the Kimberley Library as the Book Club Founder as well as some in Johannesburg Libraries. I am the founder and leader of a book club NGO which encourages young people to promote library initiatives and more importantly, promotes reading.
Have you served on any committees (movement-related or otherwise)? And what was your role on the committee(s)? Yes. I have been appointed as the chairperson of a book club NPO which is involved in promoting reading in rural townships and previously disadvantaged communities across South Africa. Primarily in Soweto Libraries. I have since become the director in this NGO and now serve as a board member.
Please describe any experience you have with conflict resolution and/or consensus building. As someone who is part of a board or committee, we have differences when it come to the programmes we should be carrying out. This often leads to debates on how a specific event would play out in real life and we often have to justify and substantiate why we want to have said programme, workshop or session. In this manner, I can often see why an initiative will make sense for that particular audience or target group and will often encourage debate for us to have the full scope of an idea. Should we reach an impasse, we then put the ideas to a vote to reach consensus.
In your ideal world, what does the affiliate model and ecosystem look like? The current affiliate model, in my opinion, caters for every user group and/organisation. I would add that more people know about their intricacies and how they work and have more in-depth training on how funding around each affiliate model works. I would also say there should be a clear path provided for conflicting ideas and how to escalate problems or challenges within any given committee.
In your ideal world, what are AffCom’s roles and responsibilities in relation to the movement and affiliates? AffCom should play the role of influencing which initiatives within the movement take centre-stage and getting the appropriate funding and highlight ones that will uplift communities. They should also get involved in as many community events as possible and share knowledge and guidance on ways to encourage more people, youth, women and marginalised groups to become editors,.
What role within AffCom are you most interested in: advisory or voting member? Advisory
