Call for Participation[edit]

The Microgrant is open to volunteers, individuals,groups and organizations who will want to contribute to the Africa Day Campaign. Volunteers who would like to organize training, contribution or translation events in the month of May in order to contribute knowledge, images and data that will significantly enrich and increase existing Micro-grants of up to 1500 USD will be allocated to local African communities for the occasion. Several types of activities are offered to organizers.


Criteria for Grant Application[edit]

The grant is intended for expenses related to the Africa Day Campaign, which will take place from May to July. Individuals, groups, and organizations are eligible to apply, and membership is not required for organizations and groups. Requests between $500 and $1,500 will be considered.

Grant applications and reports can be submitted in either French or English. While the successful application may be awarded to anyone, regardless of location, individuals or groups located in Africa will receive favorable consideration.

Proposals should aim to improve one or more of Wikimedia's existing projects, particularly Wikipedia, Wikiquote, and Wikidata, in any language. It is strongly recommended to propose activities that align with the list of proposed activities on the Africa Day homepage.

All applications must meet the following criteria:

  • Applications will not be accepted after 25th April, 2023.
  • The review period will take place between April 19th 2023 to April 30th, 2023, and applicants will receive a decision by by May 5th, 2023.
  • Proposals to improve third-party applications or services are not eligible for funding and will be discarded.
  • Grantees must adhere to the Universal Code of Conduct and Friendly Spaces policies.
  • Applicants must be in good standing for any ongoing activity funded by the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikimedia France, Wikimedia Switzerland, and WikiFranca.
  • Works and contributions must be able to be published within the framework of open access ethical agreements.
  • Applicants receiving funding must not be Wikimedia Foundation staff or contractors working more than part-time (more than 20 hours per week).
  • Applicants must have a good standing with respect to ethical behavior within the community (e.g. social behavior, financial behavior, legal behavior, etc.)
