Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal)

The Propaganda Model espoused by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky in Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media underscores the profit-centred ecosystem within which the private mass media operate. The ideological sympathy of the mass media is inclined towards market interests and the news choices thereof always correspond to elite concerns and the creation of an amicable selling ambience for the wealthy and the powerful. The government and private entities thus exert profound influence over information that is made accessible to the public. Therefore, a set of ‘filters’, sometimes independently and oftentimes additively function in the media environment, to process information and determine what qualifies as news. In the changing communication milieu, social media has emerged as a prominent channel for accessing news. This paper applies the understanding of the media-mechanism that emerges from the Propaganda Model, to the context of social media communication and tries to assess the role hashtags play in filtering news available for the social media user.
