Opening sources in breton language : offer the “minorized” language to the majority
- Type of submission
- Presentation – 20–25 minute presentation. This time includes questions from the audience.
- Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)
I would like to present two innovative projects which highlight the strategies for providing resources (once the challenges have been overcome) in the Celtic languages, in this case, in breton: The first tool, outside the framework of Wikimedia, DEVRI, is a creation which offers free access to a diachronic dictionary of the Breton language. The second tool, within the Wikimedia community, is the collection and distribution of breton literary sources on WIKImamenn (WIKIsource).
DEVRI : On the initiative of Martial Ménard [1951-2016] and under the scientific direction of Pr. Herve Le Bihan [1956-?] and Divy Kervella [1957-2017], DEVRI [absolutely - seriously] received scientific support from the Breton section of the Rennes 2 University (Kevrenn Geltiek, skol-veur Roazhon 2). Initiated in spring 2016, the initiative is to create a Diachronic Dictionary of Breton (Geriadur treadegel ar brezhoneg). DEVRI suggests re-sensing the linguistic occurrences of a given word (written in bold) in the manner of a historical dictionary, by classifying them in order of chronological appearance: year, abbreviated reference of the source, pagination, original translation (or carried out by dictionary collaborators if mentioned as : “tr.Devri’’).
WIKImamenn : Since the opening of the subdomain in October 2007, WIKImamenn (the WIKIsource in the Breton language) has collected and distributed free online monolingual Breton literary texts. The works must be in the public domain or, for various reasons, publishing rights-free. The online library is continually enriched by contributors and also offers some translations and historical documents, under the same rights terms. There are currently 191 works; 552 indexes; a few hundred songs: (303 gwerz and 10 kan ha diskan); 186 stories; 811 poems; 50 plays; 1 118 readable and listenable music scores. This entire collection currently brings together more than 180 authors.

This presentation will help to better understand the possible perspectives in the diffusion of "minorized" Celtic languages, suggest ideas to other researchers, teachers, linguists and lead to the pooling, sharing of these linguistic and literary resources.
