Description

Let's create a WikiDatabase specifically for citations. This would allow us to globally track citation usage across Wikis, evaluate their quality, add metadata and improve highly reused citations. Currently Wikidata is unsuitable for this (with exception of scholarly articles) because of the size load.

WikiCite/Shared Citations is a bold project that would essentially create a wiki equivalent of DOI scholarly article identifiers – but for all citations. It would enable researchers and editors to find related articles and also split the work of verifying claims inside text versus improving/featuring metadata about each source, while also reducing duplication significantly. Malicious edits to widely shared citations would have similar ramifications as widely used Templates, but it would also make detection of vandalism easier to mitigate too.
