Allow viewing of own deleted contributions on Special:DeletedContibutions

NoN Too problematic from a legal point of view

  • Problem: Administrators can use Special:DeletedContributions to search for user contributions that have been deleted before. However, most users gain many deleted contribs over time, maybe by patrolling new pages, or by doing simple mistakes. Reviewing these revisions would make many things easier, especially for newbies:
    • After a sysop deleted your work, you can review what you did wrong to understand his concerns.
    • You can comprehend your own wiki-history even years later and do some statistics.
    • Really problematic things are hidden by oversight anyway.
  • Who would benefit: All non-admins with interest in their own on-wiki history of some sort, as mentioned above.
  • Proposed solution: Introducing a mydeletedhistory permission allowing to view the history of own deleted contributions, but not their content, as this can be problematic (copyright, privacy, offending edits, private information store). By default, this permission could be assigned to the autoconfirmed group.

Discussion

I like this idea, it would be very useful at Wikinews to allow users to browse their deleted submissions and corresponding reviewer feedback. 1) However this takes many clicks to view for a sysop now, I would suggest to write an interface where people can view the old page contents with one click. 2) Also I would maybe suggest to make it limited to a particular user right because often people could abuse this feature to re-create deleted pages which were highly promotional. Unfortunately, this is a no-go for legal reasons: we're legally not permitted to store publicly certain kinds of content, even if "publicly" means "whomever has password to a certain non-privileged account". Regardless, thanks for participating in our survey! MaxSem (WMF) (talk) 22:40, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@MaxSem (WMF): I have a few problems with this assesment:
  • This proposal is about introducing permissions like that. This part isn't legally problematic per se. Assigning them to appropiate groups is a second part. Particularly, this isn't targeted at making own deleted content visible, but only own log entries of this content. There might be a misunderstanding here regarding the readability of deleted content, for further information please consult the linked task on Phabricator.
  • Has this particular suggestion been legally assesed before? I wasn't able to find any record of this idea on Phabricator. If yes, please provide additional information.
I think it would be a pity if this proposal is archived before it's investigated whether it's really that problematic as it may seem. --MGChecker (talk) 22:57, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, we ran this past our legal team. MaxSem (WMF) (talk) 23:05, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
