Community Wishlist Survey 2019/Archive/Develop common modules throught languages for the use of Wikidata in Wikipedias
Develop common modules throught languages for the use of Wikidata in Wikipedias
- Problem: We have now the possibility to enter a very big number of informations in Wikidata for one part, and second part, Wikidata has often more informations than an infobox from Wikipedia. We are also able to add sources. Wikidata is open to a very large number of languages. But if datas are often existing, they are not systematicaly displayed, because programs are old and not adapted to new ways to contribute.
- Who would benefit: Every Wikipedia, especially small Wikipedias where the number of users is very small. But note that on the French Wikipedia, we sometimes have problems to make updates on some point, for example when the subject is very far.
- Proposed solution: Considering Wikidata is now enough complete, I propose we develop algorithms able to display datas in a very big number of Wikipedias with the necessary adaptation to languages, as we done for infoboxes and tables in cycling, putting the priority on small Wikipedias. The goal will be to create perfect infoboxes (see fr:Grand Prix de Denain 2016 in different languages) and tables, where there is no longer problems to display informations, and infoboxes we can qualify to wealthy and updated. Documentation on how to fill Wikidata will be also one of priorities. One of the idea is to spend less time in updates, and permit at one user to do the work for everybody.
- More comments: On cycling, we create a project that use d:Module:Cycling race. We enter datas and a supermodule permits to give datas at around 20 Wikipedias. The idea is to share data and let the others benefit from them in the idea then can make updates or corrections. Datas are also reused on Commons when we have a category thanks to Wikidata Infobox, translatable in all languages (if users add translations).
Yesterday, I add a bourgmestre (P6) for Brugelette in Belgium. CA Wiki display this information from Wikidata, RO Wiki do it with the source. The others 25 Wikipedias are not able to take this information, some of them don't have an infobox. If the mayor/bourgmestre change, it will be very difficult to obtain naturally all updates. To stay in this domain, the actual system is also a problem to update the number of inhabitants.

- If I understand correctly, this sounds like phab:T121470 (“Central Global Repository for Templates, Lua modules, and Gadgets”). If so, this idea has been proposed at the Community Wishlist Survey 2015 and ranked third in the voting, see Community Tech/Central repository for gadgets, templates and Lua modules. The implementation seems to be stalled, unfortunately, as this would really be great to have. —MisterSynergy (talk) 16:14, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
- Yes and no, it is more in the idea of the Wikiproject Cycling on Wikidata when we develop and then take contact with local users to adapt, get translations, and do the first tests. Less blabla and more action. The goal here is to develop for example richier infoboxes in very few time, infoboxes are new and appear identical from a language to another. There is no need of a central repositery as the first priority, modules on Wikidata and updates on Wikipedias can be a good thing, especially when we make developments. And finally, there is here a wish to go directly encounter the small Wikipedias. The global idea is to really use Wikidata to update basic informations. Hey Jérémy-Günther-Heinz Jähnick - unfortunately, we won't be able to work on this proposal as the part of it that's not covered by 2015's wish Community Tech/Central repository for gadgets is not really within the scope of our team. You're askng for two things here - to have a global repository of modules and templates and to have particular set of templates available everywhere. The former had already been voted top 10 by the community, so it doesn't need another vote, although it's unclear when this functionality will be actually implemented. The latter is up to each community to decide, we can't force them to use any centralized templates. MaxSem (WMF) (talk) 21:03, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
- MaxSem (WMF) : as showed on d:Module:Cycling race, when an algorithm is good it is naturally adopted by communities. Jérémy-Günther-Heinz Jähnick (talk) 12:09, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
- Sorry, we're a team of programming, editing templates is just not what we're supposed to do. MaxSem (WMF) (talk) 00:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
