Disable mobile view in preferences for logged-in users

  • Problem: On my smartphone or on my tablet, I only want to display the desktop version because the mobile one doesn't support gadgets (all Wikis) or even editing (Wikidata). So I often have to switch back to the desktop version which may be difficult due to infinite scroll on Watchlist or RecentChanges.
  • Who would benefit: All advanced users editing from mobile devices
  • Proposed solution: Add a preference for logged-in users to always disable the mobile version

I don't think so. This one is specifically about enabling desktop view on mobile as a preference. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 21:46, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Ayack: I use the desktop version on my iPad just fine; I tapped the "Desktop" button at the bottom of the page many months ago, and it's stayed that way. Are you finding that your mobile device forgets that you tapped that button, and that you need to tap it again? It sounds like you're experiencing a bug, to me. Can you give some more specific details about what's actually happening to you? --Deskana (talk) 01:02, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Deskana:: Yes, my iPhone and iPad regularly forget that I clicked on Desktop view. It's not systematic but it occurs often enough to be annoying. Ayack (talk) 09:12, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think it'd be better to fix whatever bug it is that's causing that rather than introducing yet another preference. Our preference system is now so complex that we can really only afford to add preferences if there's no other feasible way of addressing the relevant issue, so if the bug here can be fixed easily, that'd be a better route to go down. --Deskana (talk) 10:06, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ayack: There's a product team that's currently working on advanced contribution features for the mobile skin. They're bringing lots of editor controls to the mobile site -- here's a current mockup:

I'm going to archive this proposal, because there's already a team working on it. You should check out that project page, and let the team know what you think. Thanks for participating in the survey. -- DannyH (WMF) (talk) 22:20, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
