Support for the IIIF Image API on Wikimedia Commons

NoN This proposal is too big

  • Problem: IIIF was created to allow the sharing and interoperability of high quality zoomable images. This idea proposes that Wikimedia Commons hosts a IIIF Image Server and makes their image content available using the IIIF Image API. This would allow Wikimedia Commons to use off the shelf open source image viewers like Leaflet or Open Sea Dragon and also allow users to reuse these images in external IIIF tools and be embedded in other websites. These IIIF Images could be wrapped in a manifest provided by Wikimedia Commons or users could create their own manifests using this IIIF Image service. A prototype for this service already exists and is discussed below. Wikimedia Commons provides access to zoomable images using IIPServer but this is currently in a labs environment and is often unavailable.
  • Who would benefit: All Commons users who would like to zoom into large images.
  • Proposed solution: Support the IIIF Image API by hosting a IIIF image server on the production Wiki infrastructure
  • More comments: This would allow WikiCommons to use any of the IIIF compatible viewers to view this content and also allow users to build manifests with this content. Since 2015 there has been a IIIF Image server in the Wiki labs based on IIP image. Details of the discussion can be found at: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T89552. Although this has been a good proof of concept, it hasn’t made it to the production infrastructure so is often inaccessible.

Unfortunately, our team won't be able to work on this proposal because it's too big and we need to fulfill 10 wishes per year, ideally. Thanks for participating in our survey. MaxSem (WMF) (talk) 20:38, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
