Community Wishlist Survey 2022/Archive/Add 'Open Access' tickbox to RefToolbar
Add 'Open Access' tickbox to RefToolbar
Does not require engineering resources
- Problem: When adding references there is no option to flag them as open access.
- Who would benefit: Primarily the readers and editors of scientific articles and anyone else committed to 'open access'
- Proposed solution: Add a tickbox to RefToolbar (or just it's 'journal citation' section). When ticked |doi-access=free is added to the string produced
- More comments: Scientific articles mostly use academic journals as references and >90% of these are pay-walled, however many editors focus on finding the 10% which are Open Access. Journal which are open access are clearly shown as such on the publisher website - we know what we're adding. Currently OA tags mostly end up getting added by 'Citation bot' but this is resource heavy.

Discussion
- This seems like something that should be requested at en:Wikipedia talk:RefToolbar first. If there's consensus, it could be trivially enacted by any interface administrator without the need for WMF intervention or taking up one of the wishlist slots. Ahecht (TALK

- Since this requires no engineering resources from WMF and is something only the community can implement, I'm going to archive this proposal. Thanks for participating in the survey! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 15:48, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
