Make templates more compatible

NoN Outside the scope of Community Tech

  • Problem: A lot of time has to be spent for fixing incompatibilities between templates in different languages (here: en to de, manual translation). Tried to use translation tools several times, never succeeeded, sorry. This consumes about as the same time as the proper translation (using web tools like DeepL, Google, Binf or Yandex depending on the languages).
  • Who would benefit: Translators
  • Proposed solution: Updateing templates in target languages to accept the current perameter list of the en template
  • More comments: esp. for referenceing templates - unwanted parameters in target lang may be ignored instead of generating a error

Discussion

As a templating maintainer, I don't like the proposed solution, although I understand the problem itself. Probably, here we need a solution for mapping parameters of the same meaning in different languages. @Amire80, maybe you already have some solutions on this topic? — putnik 18:03, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There have been proposals for making templates working more globally (phab:T121470), this would definitely help in the translation process. Amir can add more to it, since he has been thinking about this area for a while. Pginer-WMF (talk) 09:40, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think we should keep a template globally, and have some local translations; however big changes must be announced to be able to get others to know about this change and to translate it. Thingofme (talk) 02:33, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The english wikipedia uses en:Module:Check for unknown parameters to give an error if an template parameter is in use that is no longer supported. Finding those without it is a pain. I do not see this proposal as an proposal for global templates, although that does fix the problem aswell.--Snævar (talk) 19:28, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I very very much doubt this is something the Community Tech team is capable of doing. C933103 (talk) 22:03, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Ernsts:, the concept of Global templates was declined in a previous survey, as it was simply too large of a project for our team. See our FAQ for more information on the scope of this survey. This proposal seems quite similar to this one: Global templates and modules, and would as such be considered a duplicate. NAyoub (WMF) (talk) 03:17, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

My idea was not to have global templates but to care for better compatibility between english and for instance — or better: especially — german templates. There are a lot of templates available in most languages but not in german. I ever wondered why. Thanks!--Ernsts (talk) 06:27, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
