Deputy
Copyright cleanup and case processing tool for Wikipedia

A Deputy user experience survey was conducted on June 2023, open to all users and non-users of Deputy. The survey was part of ongoing research to identify the current impact of Deputy on the English Wikipedia and to determine its reception across the community and for the relevant editors. It ran for one week and had 10 respondents total. More information on the sample size, and why this number was expected, will be provided in the relevant report.

A big thank you to those who participated in the survey! Your insights will be helpful in guiding the development direction for Deputy.

About the survey

This is the first Deputy user experience survey, and its first survey in general, since being released back on 30 September 2022.

Since its release, Deputy has seen continuous development. Now, 8 months since release, it's a good time to look back and see how Deputy has changed the copyright problem resolution workflows on the English Wikipedia. In other words, it's time to see if the tool has been effective in its goal. A lot of data about how Deputy has done is already publicly-accessible; edits made with Deputy can be found in page histories and are collected using Quarry. However, edits on the wiki are not enough to prove Deputy's effectivity. Since its goal was to improve user experience, there must then be data about user experience while using Deputy.

Of course, not everyone will choose to use Deputy. This is expected, and it's a reason why the development of Deputy is done in a way that ensures non-users of Deputy are still able to work in the copyright cleanup space even without using the tool. For this reason, non-users are also invited to participate in the survey. The latter portion of the survey attempts to gauge how Deputy affects their work, and the former part attempts to identify why they don't use Deputy. All of these questions are optional; users should not feel forced to use the tool. Having this section for non-users will also help avoid survivorship bias in determining the impact of Deputy on wiki processes.

For existing users of Deputy, there is a question specifically for wanted features. This will eventually be used to prioritize which features should be developed and released first. Inclusion in the list does not necessarily mean it will be implemented, nor does it mean that it won't. Consider the list a collection of ideas; we're trying to see which ones users want to see first.
