Wikimedia working with the United Nations and other intergovernmental organizations (IGOs)[edit]

Abstract/description[edit]

Wikimedia Sverige has worked with the United Nations for the past 6 years to help them share their knowledge on Wikimedia projects. We have worked with many agencies on a wide range of projects related to several of the Sustainable Development Goals. The knowledge we have added to Wikimedia has been viewed 100s of millions of times. We are currently expanding our work with UN agencies as part of the Content Partnerships Hub. There are now many opportunities for other hubs, affiliates and volunteers to be involved, including around adding new valuable content, events, partnerships and Wikimedian in Residence positions. We want to share the work we have done and present how different movement actors can take part in the work. We will present the opportunities that are now available for others, as well as how this work can scale and how it connects to the Content Partnerships Hub. After the presentation we will be running a session to plan projects with participants.

Relationship to ESEAP or to the theme[edit]

The many UN agencies we have formed cooperations with are keen on engaging other Wikimedia organizations and volunteers in the work. For example this could include for the ESEAP hub or local affiliates to partner with local UN offices located in the ESEAP region. The ESEAP hub or local affiliates could also be involved with disseminating information to the local communities (e.g. communication efforts, translations and visibility at ESEAP events). There are also opportunities for local staff and volunteers to support the UN to share content by being hired for Wikimedians in Residence positions at the UN agencies.
