ESEAP Conference 2024/Report/Aliceinthealice

Things learned at the conference[edit]

The conference was a brilliant oppurtunity to meet people within the larger Wikimedia movement in my region; it is the first such event I have attended and it was a real honour to be able to attend.

I lived hearing about people's passion projects on Wiki but my biggest takeaway was my hands on experience using Wikitionary and realising the sheer amount of work that needs to be done in the First Nations space in Australia.

I was particularly inspired by the Wiktionary Workshop @ Sabah State Library with Ahmad and the talks given by RXerself: (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:RXerself)

Things the participant contributed or participated in or since the conference[edit]

I was honoured to be able to give a lightning talk, alongside Belinda Spry, on the Friday about Wikimedia Australia's partnership with Alice Springs Public Library regarding adding Central Australian Historical Images to Wikimedia Commons.

Plans after the conference (from what was learned or contributed in the conference)[edit]

As an employee of Wikimedia Australia I am inspired that we will become more involved in Wikitionary and the adding of Australia Indigenous languages to this platform.

I am also inspired by the number of young people involved in the region and have many ideas, from presentations made at ESEAP about ways that we may be able to better reach out to younger people.

Comments/ suggestions about the conference[edit]

It was such a marvelous event with so much work done by so many people. I want to offer my sincere thanks and congratulations.

In some instances it would have been great to get more information about the details surrounding events and their locations as this did lead to confusion and some dissatisfaction. An example of this is the village trip which involved significant amounts of walking in the dark on uneven surfaces - this was not suitable for all attendees and knowing this would have been very helpful.
