Roles[edit]

  • During the ESEAP conference, I participated as an attendee.
  • Additionally, I also registered as a translator from Kadazandusun to Malay for the presentation sessions. However, I did not have the opportunity to fulfill my duties due to several technical issues at that time, which resulted in the translation session being unable to proceed.

The things I learned during the ESEAP conference[edit]

During my attendance at this ESEAP conference, I participated in numerous workshops and presentation sessions delivered by individuals or groups from various countries. Each workshop and presentation provided a wealth of information and introduced new ideas to me regarding wiki projects and the wiki community. Additionally, I learned various new things related to projects that can be undertaken within Wikipedia. Here is a summary of what I have learned and gained throughout my attendance at this ESEAP conference.

Wikidata

  • On the first day of the conference, I attended a workshop related to Wikidata. Through this workshop or presentation that I attended, I learned about how Wikidata can help document various things, including languages. Through Wikidata, I discovered that there are many functions of Wikidata, including efforts to preserve languages, cultures, and more.

Language Workshop

  • Besides Wikidata, I also participated in the Language Workshop where they focused on Wiktionary and Lingua Libre. Wiktionary has become familiar to me as it was the first project I learned about, leading me to become a Wikimedian today. Wiktionary was my first step towards becoming more involved in wiki projects like now. Returning to the Language Workshop, the new thing I learned was about Lingua Libre. Lingua Libre is a platform used to record pronunciations of words in specific languages. These pronunciation recordings are crucial for Wiktionary users to identify the pronunciation of the language they are learning. This is because the pronunciations recorded using Lingua Libre are then incorporated into Wiktionary. For example, the pronunciation of "parai" in the Kadazandusun language recorded using Lingua Libre is subsequently added to Wiktionary. In my opinion, this platform is very helpful and suitable for everyone, especially those who want to learn the pronunciation of words in a particular language.

Community Spotlight: Malaysia

  • I also had the opportunity to attend a sharing session and presentation by representatives from the Wiki Club Kent regarding their efforts in empowering the Kadazandusun language and culture through Wiki projects and ESEAP. During this program, they shared about the activities that have been carried out and those planned by the Wiki Club Kent. The sharing was conducted by my colleagues, Jurina and Jilorisa, while two other presentations were delivered by the Head of the Kadazandusun Language Department at IPGMK Kent, Dr. Linah Bagu@ Siti Nurlina Bagu, and the Director of IPGMK Kent, Dr. Hamidah Binti Samsudin. I believe that these sharing sessions and presentations serve as motivation for the Wiki Club Kent to continue its efforts in developing the club.

Mari-Mari Cultural Village Trip

  • I also had the opportunity to visit the Mari-Mari Cultural Village in Inanam with other ESEAP participants. Here, I enjoyed various unique aspects of local culture. For example, in terms of food, dance, clothing, and much more. Everything provided an unforgettable experience. Although we visited at night, it did not hinder us from getting to know and learning more about the culture in Sabah. Despite being from this state, there are still many things I need to learn about my own culture. Not to be forgotten, during the ESEAP conference, we were also treated to cultural performances by students from a school in this state.

E3 - Equity

  • I also had the opportunity to attend several sessions of E3- Equity. The first session I attended was about vulgar words that exist in Wiktionary. This was presented by a participant from Indonesia who explained about several vulgar words that have been included in Wiktionary. Just like in Kadazandusun and other languages, there are also some vulgar words that have been included. Therefore, as Wikimedians, it is our duty to always maintain the integrity of the language included so as not to damage our own language, especially on a platform used by everyone.

H2 - Malay Heritage

  • In the afternoon session, I had the opportunity to attend Session H, which was Malay Heritage. This session was a presentation on manuscript preservation using Wikisource. Wikisource is a new knowledge for me that I learned on that day. From what I understand, Wikisource is a wiki project used to store old and valuable manuscripts. Wikisource serves as an archive where all contributions or manuscripts entered are 50 years old and above.
  • In this session, I also learned that a boarding school in Sandakan also has students who are active in wiki projects. These students are under the guidance of their teachers and receive strong support from their school. Their teacher, who was the presenter for this session, said that this wiki activity is very beneficial as it helps students to increase their knowledge, become more confident, and also helps improve their skills.
  • In conclusion, there were many things that I have learned throughout the 3 days attending ESEAP. This will undoubtedly greatly assist me in improving my skills and enhancing my knowledge regarding Wikipedia projects. I will utilize all the knowledge gained for the greater good and further develop this wiki project for everyone. I will also continuously enhance my knowledge about Wikipedia to be able to provide benefits to everyone.

Plans after the conference (from what was learned or contributed in the conference)[edit]

After this conference, I have many plans for the future:

  1. Explore more Wiki projects to engage in.
  2. Attend more workshops and conferences to enhance my knowledge in Wiki projects.
  3. Collaborate in developing Wiki projects with other Wikimedians, especially for the Kadazandusun community in Sabah and the Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia.
  4. Assist other communities in collaborative Wiki project development.
  5. Make more contributions to Wiki projects.
  6. Organize relevant Wiki projects such as the Wiki Dictionary project.
  7. Collaborate in building the newly launched Kadazandusun Language Wikipedia.
  8. Assisting WCUGM in expanding the wiki community network throughout the country.

Comments/ suggestions about the conference[edit]

  • Overall, the ESEAP conference has had a significant impact on all participants. Not only did it provide opportunities to learn new things, but it also helped to strengthen relationships among Wikimedians. Despite differences in origin, language, ethnicity, and culture, Wikipedia has successfully united us for one goal: free knowledge for all.
  • I feel grateful for being able to participate in the ESEAP conference. Although this is my first experience attending ESEAP, it has had a significant impact on me. It has fueled my enthusiasm to undertake further wiki projects and I am eagerly looking forward to participating in more programs in the future.
  • In conclusion, the organization of ESEAP was excellent. The organizers executed each session smoothly and orderly. Furthermore, every committee was very friendly and helpful to participants in need. The materials for each presentation were also easily accessible through the ESEAP 2024 website.
