ESEAP Conference 2024/Report/Kanzcech

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

It was my first experience attending ESEAP Conference 2024 at Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. I attended as scholarship recipient from Indonesia.

Things learned at the conference[edit]

ESEAP Hub[edit]

By participating at the ESEAP Conference I get to know more about ESEAP Hub, its activities, committee, members, and future plans.

Various Wikimedia projects and activities[edit]

One of the benefits that I get from this conference is becoming more familiar with various Wikimedia projects that I have never learned before, such as Wikidata project for preserving languages. I also have the priviledge to learn from various participants from different countries, wiki clubs and communities who have held amazing activities and projects over the years. Moreover, the conference also serves as a platform to try new Wikimedia projects and collaborate with other Wikimedians in the ESEAP region and across the world.

Diversity of culture, people and languages[edit]

During the three-day conference I was captivated by the beauty of Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, Malaysia. I was eager to explore the diversity Kota Kinabalu offers and appreciate the beauty of different culture, people and languages. We are lucky to visit Mari Mari Cultural Village to learn more about Sabah, its traditional people and culture. Moreover, I also met many new Wikimedians across the region with their own unique sets of culture, languages, and experiences.

As Speaker[edit]

My lightning talk session

At ligtning talk session (Day 2), I present my experience in creating a wiki club at Universitas Brawijaya titled Creating a wiki club in a university & encouraging students' engagement on wikimedia projects. Using the case study of Universitas Brawijaya, I share my experiences, opportunities and challenges in creating and maintaining a wiki club at the university level and supporting my students to engage with Wikimedia projects.

Comments/suggestions about the conference[edit]

I would like to thank the organizers, ESEAP committee, volunteers, and participants for making the conference possible. Overall I am satisfied with the conference, the accommodation, and food/beverages provided, although I have some comments and suggestions to improve in the future.

  • Time management should be improved. There are several delays due to various reasons and one event (cultural village trip) was organized in late evening. In my opinion, it would be better to organize the trip on less hectic day in the afternoon (or morning).
  • Alongside participants' reports, there should be an organizing committee report posted at the Meta-wiki page detailing what they have done, what went well/wrong, budget management, and lessons learned. So everyone can access and may provide input on what should and could be done to improve the conference.
  • Provide contact person(s) phone number so we know exactly who we should contact in case of emergency, flight delays, airport transfers, lost & found, etc.
