ESEAP Conference 2024 marks my inaugural participation in a conference abroad with Wikimedia. I extend my gratitude for facilitating this opportunity through the scholarship program administered by the Wikimedia Foundation. Engaging directly with Wikimedia volunteers has been an invaluable experience. Throughout this event, I have gleaned insights into various cultures, languages, and ongoing volunteer projects. Additionally, it was a privilege to explore Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, the esteemed host city of the conference.
Conference Activities[edit]
Pra-Conference[edit]
Kota Kinabalu was further enlivened by the presence of participants from the 2024 ESEAP Conference. Here, we were treated to the breathtaking sunset of Kota Kinabalu, accompanied by a showcase of various traditional Sabah artistic performances. Among the dances featured during the welcoming event were the Sumazau Dance and Magunatip Dance.
Attend to Class Sessions[edit]
On the first day of the conference, I attended a class on WikiData where I acquired new knowledge about the introduction of the Taigi/Min Nan/Ban-lam/Hokkien language. Additionally, I participated in a WikiSource class which delved into the development of WikiPabukon. A highlight of the day was the invitation extended to ESEAP Conference 2024 participants to visit Mari-Mari Village, a cultural enclave. There, we were introduced to traditional houses representing Sabah's five main ethnic communities—Bajau, Lundayeh, Murut, Rungus, and Dusun.
On the second day of the conference, I attended a class that explored the use of vulgar language in Indonesian, and I compared it with its usage in the Indonesian WikiKamus.
On the third day, I participated in the WikiKata class, where I gained insights into how communities can collaborate with various entities, such as SMEs and community organizations, to accomplish organizational goals using volunteer principles.
Future Plans[edit]
- I shared the activities of the ESEAP Conference 2024 during the monthly Wikimedia Bandung Community meeting discussion. My friends expressed keen interest in participating in this event next year.
- Following this event, I became intrigued by the programs initiated by my friends from Wikimedia Malaysia, particularly their collaborations on Wikimedia projects within the education sector. These projects involve enhancing student competencies through various school-based initiatives.
- Subsequent to the conference, I found myself newly motivated to deepen my proficiency in international languages, particularly English, to actively engage in discussions during future conference activities.
