ESEAP Conference 2024/Report/wadaihangit

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

ESEAP Conference 2024 was my first abroad experience in Wikimedia. The Conference held in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia and I received Travel Grant from the Foundation for attending the conference.

Me and my mate as Banjarese Wikimedians at ESEAP 2024
  • I learned that Wikimedia and its products are very useful for presenting everyday information or beyond geographic boundaries to be enjoyed. Not only in the form of articles, but data, media and archives including projects that participants presented.
  • I was impressed and respect also by the sessions with well presented, some were inspiring and gave encouragement to doing best at Wikimedia Project, some made me feel like I should be even more humble.

Learned Lesson[edit]

Since it was my first experince having a international conference like this, what i learned was:

  • I learned so much about Wikipediawan from other countries and their own work. It was giving me and my friend a lot of inspiration, such as various type of project that we can adopting in our community
  • It was really nice to meet Wikipedians from the same island, Borneo, and this made me feel comfortable.

Things the participant contributed or participated in or since the conference[edit]

As only participant, I attended some sessions and enjoying so much about how the conference running.

Day 1[edit]

  • The Wikimedia Foundation’s Annual Plan Conversation with ESEAP
  • Utilizing Let's Connect in the ESEAP Region
  • Wikisource Loves Manuscripts: A Partnership Perspective on Collaborative Efforts to Preserve Cultural Heritage
  • Wikimedia Australia’s Partnership with Alice Springs Public Library: Adding an Image Collection to Wikimedia Commons
  • Lisa's Wikipedia Bookclub and other initiatives from Aotearoa New Zealand

Day 2[edit]

  • Indonesian Vulgarities in Wiktionary
  • Women@Work: More than Just a Wikimedia Contribution
  • How to Encourage Women in Mainland China to Actively Participate in the Wikimedia Global Movement
  • Korean Wikidata & Mix'n'Match
  • The Report of Questionnaire of Japanese Wikimedians 2023
  • A 70-year-old Wikipedian Talks About the Charm of Libraries
  • Experiences of Wikimedian of the Year 2023 winners

In the day 2, there were 2 sessions I thought were very interesting for me. The first was Korean Wikidata Mix and Match. I think it is important to checking data items in Wikidata and their relationship with actual data or secondary data because many items are duplicates or not linked. I wish I could have had this session with more time. The second was a lightning talk about a 70 years old and talking about her experiences with Wikimedia and libraries. I think it was interesting topic and I hope this topic can be presenting at various events to attract more people of all ages to participate in Wikimedia projects. I see this as the potential for my community to more engaged with librarians and older people and promoting Banjarese Wikipedia.

Day 3[edit]

  • Gaya Street Sunday Market Photowalk
  • WikiRenjana: Perpetuating Sundanese Culinary on Wikibooks Indonesia to Maintain Cultural Heritage
  • What is WANZ?
  • Human Rights Day in the Philippines: A Community Outreach
  • Facing the Heritage Language Crisis, We Provide Promotion and Teaching through Wikipedia
  • Crowdmapping is More Fun with OpenStreetMap!
Me joining OSM session

In the day 3, the Open Street Map session was very interesting. Participants were asked to edit maps in their home town for familiar reason. Unfortunately, this session was limited in time and I hope there will be a follow-up session where ESEAP Wikipedians have forum for discussing OSM's attachment to the Wikimedia project.

Plans after[edit]

After the conference, i planned to:

  • Taking active role in next conference, i planned being MC or host of session if i may.
  • Planning to create a collaboration project about Borneo's languages, seeing some similarities in culinary terms, I think this is a good step. If you interested with this theme, you can contact me anyway
  • I just found out that we can write reports or blogs on the diff site, thanks to a Japanese Wikipedian who mentioned about this. I wish there will a community related to diff, so i can joined.
  • Developing content on Banjarese Wikipedia about Kota Kinabalu and other cities where ESEAP participants come from
  • Submitting about my project at the next conference.

Comments / suggestions about the conference[edit]
