Can Oral Hokkien Language be Written? How Can Wikidata help?

The Wikimedia communities in the ESEAP region are not aware of the commerse population Hokkien speaking people, which are the number one language community in Taiwan, and not a quite small portion in many ESEAP countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and China. Even though that there is nan Wikipedia site, most contributions come from Taiwan, and not well-known even in those previous mentioned contries Hokkien speaking population. In this talk I would like to tell not only there is a nan Wikipedia available, but also you can contribute by adding nan label or description in romanization writing system Peh-oe-ji, or hanji characters on Wikidata. It is possible to preserve Hokkein language in written from by adding content on Wikidata.

  • After the session, the participant will engage more with ESEAP Hokkien speaking population, and the possibility of cross-border collaboration.
  • In the upcoming conference, this session will have more participants about Hokkien language in the future.
