Abstract:
In 2022 professors from six Brazilian universities, in coordination with Wiki Movimento Brasil, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH, US), part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), received a Brazilian federal grant to develop and coordinate actions to improve hearing and healthcare content through classroom programs, to create a MOOC as an introduction to Audiology (study of hearing) in Wikiversity, and to participate in the global campaign Wiki4WorldHearingDay2023. This campaign built upon the success of Wiki4WorldHearingDay2019. The activities are the core of the Hearing Health campaign 2022-2024. World Hearing Day, held annually on 3 March, aims to raise awareness on preventing deafness and hearing loss and promoting ear and hearing care globally. Results indicate that Wiki4WorldHearingDay2023 participants contributed 190,000 words, more than 248 references and 140 images to 288 existing and 50 new Wikipedia articles. Contributions happened in several languages: English, Portuguese, French, Spanish, Chinese and German. Brazilian contributors who were part of the federal grant for educational activities within Wikimedia. Consequently, Wikipedia articles in Portuguese led in number of articles edited and created during the online campaign (74%). Finally, as one of the project activities a MOOC as an introduction to Audiology (study of hearing) is being developed. Due to the territorial extension of Brazil, there is a difficulty in accessing information in an equal and uniform manner. The Audiology course intends to remedy the lack of free quality materials. We will highlight what can be useful from our experiences in this project in audiology to other contexts.
