Open up: How we challenge the development of digital learning platforms in education

Abstract:
In Germany, the federal government has initiated the development of an educational platform with the aim of creating a comprehensive digital infrastructure. Wikimedia Deutschland has critically examined this project with a study in 2022.

In this session, I will use the specific example to present general trends and questions that accompany our educational work in the Wikimedia Movement:

• How open and fair are digital learning/educational platforms and technologies?
• How do decisions about design and technology influence the design of learning and education?
• And how can we, as part of the Open Education Movement, influence political and technological decisions?

I will also show ways how we have been able to use this study to influence policy and decision makers in Germany and what our next steps will be.
