EduWiki Conference 2023 is a significant event organized to promote the use of Wikimedia projects in education. As Wikimedia Community User Group Turkey, we attended the conference in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, along with Zafer and HakanIST. We participated in this important event to share our efforts in supporting the use of Wikimedia projects in education in Turkey and to create collaboration opportunities with other communities.

EduWiki Conference 2023 was designed as a platform for information and experience sharing among educators, researchers, and Wikimedia communities. The main focus of the conference was to discuss how Wikimedia projects can be used in education and how access to open knowledge can be supported in the field of education. Throughout the event, the aim was to discuss strategies, resources, and collaboration opportunities for the effective use of Wikimedia projects in education.

EduWiki Conference 2023 enriched the participants by providing an inspiring program with speeches, interactive sessions, presentations, and workshops. The conference sessions were organized to highlight the potential of Wikimedia projects in education and to bring together communities engaged in this field to encourage collaboration.

This report will provide a detailed overview of the key sessions, presentations, and activities of EduWiki Conference 2023, as well as our participation and contributions as WMTR. It will include information about significant presentations, panel discussions, and collaboration opportunities.

EduWiki Conference 2023 took place in Belgrade The conference offered a program filled with inspiring speeches, presentations, panels, and workshops on the use of Wikimedia projects in education. Below is a detailed report on the important sessions, presentations, and activities of the conference:

Opening Session

At the beginning of the conference, the organizers delivered opening speeches to inform the participants about the event. Ivana Madžarević from Wikimedia Serbia provided information about the event and welcomed the participants. Next, Nebojša Vasiljević, the director of Petlja Foundation, gave a presentation emphasizing the importance of Wikimedia projects in education. Following the speeches, Shani Evenstein Sigalov, the Vice Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation Board, and LiAnna Davis from the Wikipedia & Education User Group discussed the relationship between education and Wikimedia projects.

The Future of Wikimedia & Education: What's our common vision? - LiAnna Davis

In this session, discussions were held in groups on the foundations of the relationship between education and Wikipedia. Three groups, each consisting of six people, engaged in an exchange of ideas to create a shared vision for the 2030 movement strategy of Wikipedia and education. The shared ideas that emerged from this brainstorming were presented to other groups through a presentation.

Let's use Wikipedia's translator in schools! - Nebojša Ratković

This session featured a general presentation on the use of Wikipedia's translation tool in schools. Participants were then asked to share their experiences with using the translation tool. Other participants shared their experiences with the translation tool. I had the opportunity to share my experiences with the "Translation Tool" on the Turkish Wikipedia and my stance on machine translations with other participants. I also had the chance to present a proposal for the Wiki Loves Translation project.

Wikipedia & Education User Group Open Meetings: Help brainstorm! - Filip Maljković

In this session, open meetings of the Wikimedia Education User Group were held. Participants engaged in brainstorming about the use of Wikimedia projects in education and shared their ideas. Additionally, Mohammad Hijjawi delivered a presentation titled "Identifying Wikipedia Articles in Need of Translation or Expansion" and discussed the use of the PETScan tool on untranslated or underdeveloped articles.

Offline tools - Florence Devouard

This session shared statistics on internet access and demonstrated the accessibility status based on technological infrastructure (4G). In this context, questions were raised within a circle that needed to include definitions under the headings of human-technology-content and initiatives. Information was also provided about offline tools such as Kiwix and WikiFundi. Participants were provided with information on how to connect to WikiFundi via WiFi using Kiwix and how to use the encyclopedia offline.

EduWiki Conference 2023 provided an important platform for the use of Wikimedia projects in education. As WMTR, we had the opportunity to attend the conference and share our work in Turkey with other participants. The event encouraged collaboration and knowledge sharing among educators, researchers, and Wikimedia communities. Throughout the conference, important discussions were held on the potential of Wikimedia projects in education and how access to open knowledge can be supported in the field of education. EduWiki Conference 2023 was a significant step towards promoting access to open knowledge and supporting the use of Wikimedia projects as educational tools.
