Empowering Nigerian Female Artists: Through Art & Feminism Edith-A-Thon at KWASU Fan Club

The Kwasu Wiki Fan Club hosted the Edith-A-Thon for Nigerian Female Artists to increase and improve existing Wikipedia articles on Nigerian female artists, bridging the gender gap and promoting inclusion in the art world.

This campaign was led by Bukola James, the founder of the Kwasu Wiki Fan Club. The event included two online training sessions and one in-person training. The in-person training was attended by over 25 participants who were students of the Kwara State University Malete, thanks to the micro-grant support from A+F, which made the Edith-A-Thon resounding and resulting in 525 total edits, 9.82k words added, and 22.3k views among others. The campaign dashboard recorded impressive numbers, showcasing the dedication and hard work of all involved.

The in-person training was also attended by the Deputy University Librarian. They gained valuable insights into the topic of Art and Feminism and the need for promoting gender equality through art and education across different spheres of life.

Participants were guided on how to carry out minor edits such as adding WikiLinks to articles, adding citations, expanding article sections, creating and updating Wikidata items that specifically focus on Nigerian Female Artists using a compiled list of suggestions. In the end, the Edith-A-Thon was a significant step toward promoting inclusion in the art world, and the results speak for themselves. The event showcased the incredible work of Nigerian female artists and provided a platform for their voices to be heard. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved, the Edith-A-Thon was a tremendous success.
