PhilWiki Community promotes language preservation and cultural heritage advocacies at ADNU
The founding chair of PhilWiki Community and Bikol Wikipedia administrator presented PhilWiki Community: its advocacies in indigenous languages and cultural heritage preservation through Wikimedia as part of SIRANG Perspectives and Prospect international conference held last October 25-26, 2023 at Fr. Godofredo Alingal, SJ Hall, Ateneo de Naga University in Naga City, Philippines.
As part of the global Wikimedia movement, the Naga City-based affiliate also organizes and sponsors Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Folklore, Wiki Loves Earth and other photography contests to document the built, intangible and natural heritage of the Philippines through Wikimedia Commons.
The 2-day international conference feauturing four scholars from the Ateneo de Manila University, University of the Philippines-Diliman, Partido State University, and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines was attended by different educators and researchers.
Dr. Ambeth Ocampo who is best known for his definitive writings about Philippines' national hero José Rizal talked about disinformation in history while Dr. Ricardo Jose, a professor at the Department of History, University of the Philippines Diliman, presented about the American colonial period. Jose is known as the country's foremost scholar on the Second World War in the Philippines and the Asia-Pacific.
Ian Christopher Alfonso, a Doctor of Philosophy in History student, a Senior History Researcher at the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, and the author of 'Dogs in Philippine History' talked about his book and presented Liberation of Historical Sources. Last year, he served as one of the final jurors in Wiki Loves Monuments Philippines 2022.
Internationally distinguished Bicolano historian Dr. Danilo M. Gerona discussed the relationship between Christianity and the suppression of indigenous sexual culture. He is best known for his books “Ferdinand Magellan: The Armada De Malucco and the European Discovery of the Philippines,” and “La Ciudad de Nueva Caceres: The Rise of a Sixteenth Century Spanish City.” Last August, he was one of the resource speakers at the Bikol WikiConference wherein he talked on The Bikol Language and The Construction of Regional Identity.
The international conference with a theme Understanding the Contemporary Landscape Through the Lens of History and Heritage was organized by the Ateneo de Naga University Social Science Department, Partido State University, University of Nueva Caceres, Ateneo de Naga University, Nueva Heritage Movement, Centro Naga Business Club and PhilWiki Community.
