After the AI application ChatGPT was released in 2022, it quickly became clear that ChatBot would also have a massive impact on the education system and people's everyday learning. In a short time, quite a few handouts on the use of AI applications in the classroom were developed and examples of good practices were shared among educational practitioners. Various educational experts have highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of AI in education – enthusiasm and concern have been expressed.

Since ChatGPT is a proprietary product developed and distributed by a private company in the US, the question for us is whether we are using it to make education better. After all, it is unclear which data sets the program is based on, how it handles information that is fed into it, or what the status of data security and protection is.

What do we want? What could an alternative, an open and democratically designed AI look like? We would like to explore this question together with educational practitioners, researchers, technology experts and political actors as well as all interested parties in Germany. The goal is to develop recommendations for the use of open AI in education and finally hand them over to educational politicians in our government.

Although our event series will be held in German and we'll discuss the topic within the German educational and political system, our educational team at Wikimedia Germany already thinks about how to make our insights visible and accessible for a broader and international community. Meaning: You will hear from us again soon :)
