There are many Web sources of images under free licenses.

The presence of a resource on this list does not guarantee that all or any of the images in it are under a free licence. You are still responsible for checking the copyright status of each image before you submit it to Wikipedia.

  • - 13,990,108 Free Public Domain/CC0 Images from multiple sources. Single search for images from Wikipedia Commons, Pixabay, Flickr, British Library, NYPL and others. Full image downloads without login or restrictions. Includes a meme maker.
  • - Find Millions Public Domain/CC0 stock images, clip-art, historical photos and more. Excellent Search Results. Commercial use OK. No attribution required. No login required.
  • Flickr Public Domain Search - About 6 million Public Domain images (link is to search filtered by "CC0", "No known copyright restrictions" and "U.S. Gov't Works"). Includes British Library.
  • British Library Over a million images, taken mostly from illustrations in 17th, 18th and 19th Century books, released into the public domain, as announced on the British Library blog. Metadata about the images and the books from which they come is also available for download on Github.
  • – More than 56 000 absolutely free photos under Creative Commons CC0 (Public domain) – free for personal and commercial use, no attribution required.

  • Pixnio – A large collection of high resolution public domain images. Free for personal and commercial use, no attribution required.
  • PixLoger Free Stock Photos - A collection High-Quality photographs of various categories. Free to download and use for Mockups. Best for creators like YouTube, bloggers, web developers or artists.
  • JSC Digital Images Collection NASA's Space images. Free to use.
  • Albumarium Free high-quality Creative Commons images. Filterable for commercial/non-commercial use.
  • Barnimages Collection of free high-resolution stock photography.
  • Pictoscope Art and Illustrations from Historic Book Collections.
  • The NOAA Photo Library Photos from the The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, covering a wide range of images.
  • Picdrome Royalty free pictures gallery
  • RetroGraphik is a Vintage Picture Resources blog that offer free and paid royalty-free quality graphics. Blog is actively updated regularly.
  • Alegri Photos Over 2500 creative commons free images.
  • 4 Free Photos - High-quality stock and public domain images, free of charge for commercial and personal use.
  • Freerange Stock - Many thousands of free stock photos, licensed free for commercial or private use.
  • Devostock -Free and public domain images downloads
  • US Library of Congress - not all images are free, but many are. Best for images whose copyright has expired, but also contains other images that were gifted by the photographer to the public domain, as well as images taken by US federal government employees (that are hence also PD).
  • Public domain vectors - Collection of public domain vector images.
  • Public Domain Pictures - hi-res photos and illustrations for personal and commercial use. Resolution at least 1280 x 850 px.
  • Word Processor Clipart - high-quality public domain images.
  • Vectorportal - creative commons free vector images.
  • Reusable Art Public Domain Images - An ever-growing collection of vintage drawings, illustrations and photographs from books, magazines and other printed materials. Original publication information is included with each image for copyright verification. All images meet or exceed the Berne Convention standard for a creative work to be in the public domain.
  • Karen's Whimsy - Scans of engravings and other artwork from a personal collection of old books, magazines, and post cards. Updated regularly.
  • Copyright-Free Photos - High quality free photo library for any use, provided that each photographer is contacted beforehand. (Otherwise, not GFDL compatible)
  • GNU - GNU Art.
  • Flickr has a special section for pictures tagged with a Creative Commons license. For example: BY and BY-SA, Search engine. Note that images with NoDerivs or NonCommercial are Non-free Creative Commons licenses and cannot be used on wikipedia. Consider using a work whose author tagged it with a license that is acceptable for use here.

  • BNF's Gallica - Digital documents from the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF).


  • -Great resource for electron microscopy and histological images. Includes general biomedical and science-related images, cancer-specific scientific and patient care-related images, and portraits of directors and staff of the National Cancer Institute. Image use policy states: "All images are in the public domain and may be used, linked, or reproduced without permission. If an image is used, credit should be given to the listed source and/or author".
  • - All content published under a CC-BY license. Some journal articles are accompanied by images that are useful for an encyclopedia.
  • - IAN Symbol Libraries. 2500 symbols in svg, ai and png formats, and a online vector editor. Cost and royalty free.

Search Engines[edit]

  • FIST – Free Image Search Tool (by User:Magnus Manske, hosted on the Wikimedia Toolserver) Covers Wikimedia Commons, Flickr, everystockphoto and other sites. Can search whole Wikipedia categories automatically to suggest free images for each article.
  • - Searching over 2.2 million free photos, including Wikipedia and NASA. Free user accounts with drag and drop collections, tagging, rating, and comments.
  • Google Advanced Search - Under Usage Rights, select "free to use, share, or modify, even commercially."
  • - Searches hand picked Free stock photo-, public domain-, and photo community sites. Includes the ability to search by rights! (whether you need to give credit, ask permission or not)
  • A free design search engine for free images, searchable by license type. Also includes other free files for designers such as png images, graphics, vectors, themes, fonts, and mock-ups.
  • - Searches one billion stock photos and video, including free images, public domain, creative commons, royalty-free and rights-managed. (NB - Firefox users only - website will not open with Internet Explorer)
  • - Spanish free photo search engine. Search by keywords and color.
