A new survey question. Many of those who aren't using the internet yet are either concerned about the cost, or don't see what value it has for them.
Awareness of Wikipedia[edit]
In Egypt, awareness of Wikipedia is lower than any other country we surveyed.
How they learned about Wikipedia[edit]
Of the respondents who had heard of Wikipedia, we asked how they had found out about it. The internet is the primary way people in Egypt learn about Wikipedia.
Reasons for using Wikipedia[edit]
Frequency of use[edit]
The results of this question are used further in the survey to ask additional questions of the infrequent or non-users and learn more about their perspectives. This also provides more detail around the overall awareness issue - showing how many use it vs those who don't.
How interested were the infrequent / non-users[edit]
For the respondents who said 'rarely' or 'never' to how often they use Wikipedia, we asked about their interest in Wikipedia. We wanted to see if people who didn't use it just didn't care, or wanted to but experienced some barrier.

Smartphones vs Feature phones[edit]
To avoid differences of interpretation of what exactly a smartphone is, we instead focused on whether their mobile phone could possibly access the internet. This is the key differentiator between feature phones and smart phones, as well as identifying who might be able to access Wikipedia on the internet. Egypt has a particularly low level of smartphones.

85% people in Egypt have 3G or lower.
App usage[edit]
We were interested in how much smartphone users here actively downloaded and used Apps.
Gender[edit]
The representation of female respondents is more than we've seen in Nigeria, Ghana, and India, but less than Mexico and Brazil.

The respondents categorized themselves as either Urban or Rural.
