Project idea[edit]

What is the problem you're trying to solve?[edit]

While there are numerous intelligent and Amharic-literate internet users writing elsewhere on the web, relatively few have engaged in depth with our website. Despite pleas for more volunteer participation, there is not enough compared to what could be, in fact barely a handful of active contributing users. I feel that with some incentive and reward this situation would change drastically.

What is your solution?[edit]

Outline areas of growth in which incentives for quality Amharic articles would be offered, eg. Medical, Scientific, Geographic, Literary, etc.

Authors who qualify for articles that result in sufficient standards of quality will win contest prizes offering more incentive for more articles by more participants within a timeframe.

Project goals[edit]

The deficiency in active and interested editors creating articles on Amharic Wikipedia will be reduced. The deficiencies in areas such as cities, languages, botany, etc. will be reduced.

Project plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

The participants and articles produced in different areas will be kept track of on a page on the Amharic Wikipedia.

A list of eligible redlinks will be drawn up by combining titles from:

a) the 516 articles missing from Amharic on the list of 1000 articles every wikipedia should have (see https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wikipedias_by_sample_of_articles )

b) the 500 articles in the most other wikipedias missing from Amharic (see http://tools.wmflabs.org/joanjoc/sugart.php?l1=simple&pr=wiki&l2=am&cat=&dpt=1&tpl=&uselang=en&go=Proceed )

c) possibly the local redlinks list (see https://am.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E1%88%8D%E1%8B%A9:WantedPages )

The resulting list of eligible articles to choose from will then be sorted into categories (example: cities & towns)

Budget[edit]

  • Project management $8,000
  • Disbursements (Prizes) $10,000

Community engagement[edit]

I will put word out of the contest wherever possible on Amharic noticeboards etc

Sustainability[edit]

If this is a success and runs out quickly it may be feasible to expand or continue the program

Measures of success[edit]

Need target-setting tips? Note: in addition to your project-specific measures of success, you will also be asked to report on some Global Metrics at the end of your final report. Please keep this in mind as you plan, and we'll support you as you begin your project.

Success is depending on the expansion of the number of articles of reasonable quality, referencing and size that are successfully added in the specified deficient areas.

Get involved[edit]

Participants[edit]

Codex Sinaiticus - I have been a wikipedian and admin / bureaucrat at Amharic Wikipedia since 2005. In ten years of hard volunteer work I have added at least half of the articles for which I have never received one penny, in addition to administrative duties.
