Project idea[edit]

What is the problem you're trying to solve?[edit]

New Zealand still has a very sparse number of Wikipedia contributors, and mentors are hard to come by. People - and especially women - find the learning curve and initial entry into Wikipedia offputting. There is also very little coverage of significant New Zealand women artists on Wikipedia and we would like to change that.

Once you've started editing it's also hard to keep up your enthusiasm or to grow your skills on your own. You have to find time to fit editing in around the rest of your life (including kids) and if you don't have face-to-face help, find ways to make 'friends' within Wikipedia for advice and companionship.

What is your solution?[edit]

We want to start a monthly WIkipedia meet-up at The Dowse Art Museum in Lower Hutt (just out of central Wellington) which will create a friendly and helpful atmosphere for people new to Wikipedia to learn, and existing contributors to share their skills and make new friends. We want to provide a platform that supports New Zealand editors to increase the coverage of New Zealand women artists on Wikipedia.

In Lower Hutt we have a catchment of 465,000 people within a 45 minute drive. At the Museum we can provide a venue, power and wifi.

At the Museum we have just run our first Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon, as part of the Art+Feminism event. We expected 10-12 people and had 30 on the day, mostly people who had never edited Wikipedia.

We have been working on a GLAM-Wiki project over the past four months, writing entries on 100 New Zealand Craft and Applied artists. As a result we now have three experienced editors at The Dowse, and a network of Wikipedia editors to draw on.

We want to keep up the momentum!

What we'd use the funding for[edit]

To offset venue hire costs and modest refreshments

To promote the event in local print media (a quarter of the attendees to our Edit-A-Thon learned about it not online but through a newspaper article)

To stage supervised children's activities at the same time as the meet-up runs. We have found many women in particular find it hard to take time out for meet-ups because of childcare. If we can offer free activities for their children with childcare built in, we will make the events much more appealing to women (and men with children as well).

Goals[edit]

To create a sustainable regular meet-up for Wellington editors whilst also providing support for Wikipedia newbies. To provide childcare options for parents wanting to attend the meet-up.

We are aiming to host seven meet-ups from May to December 2015. Our goal is attract between 6 and 12 editors for each meet-up. We are aiming to upload 70 new articles and update 150 Wikipedia articles by December 2015.

Endorsements[edit]

  • The Dowse is a lovely venue that is not your traditional meet-up space. It's a public art gallery, which means that it's accessible to many people who may not be attracted to the standard fare. TimClicks (talk) 07:57, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
  • I like it! Skud (WMF) (talk) 00:50, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

  • Child-friendly activities would definitely increase the chances of me going, and the length that I could stay Lanma726 (talk) 06:24, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Nice to see ideas that aim to grow and sustain communities - I would like to encourage you to further develop this idea as a grant proposal (by clicking on the "Expand your idea into a grant proposal" button below!) -Thepwnco (talk) 18:19, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
  • I think that child care is a great idea that is rarely considered in Wikimedia events. heather walls (talk) 06:14, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
  • We strongly support the Art+Feminism nodes taking initiative and building local community and infrastructure. We think it is key towards building towards a rhizomatic model. Theredproject (talk) 01:10, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
  • I strongly endorse this project Failedprojects (talk) 14:52, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Endorse. I am not a New Zealander, but I can certainly see the merits of your proposal, especially since you have already held similar successful events. Childcare is an excellent dimension to add to your plan. Be sure to submit a grant proposal for this idea if you have not already done so. The best of luck, Wordreader (talk) 00:16, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
  • This is a great idea, moreover, childcare should be streamlined into all volunteer events! :) Shameran81 (talk) 19:27, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

Project plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Our main activity will be to host a sustainable regular meet-up for Wellington editors, especially women. This meet-up will foster women editors whilst also providing support for Wikipedia newbies. We aim to provide childcare options for parents wanting to attend the meet-up.

We are aiming to host a monthly meet-up from May to December 2015. Our goal is attract between 6 and 12 editors for each meet-up. Our goal is to encourage and empower women Wikipedia editors. We are aiming to upload 70 new articles and update 150 Wikipedia articles by December 2015.

Budget[edit]

Each meet-up will require the following:

  • One experienced editor: $150 NZD
  • Childcare for 3 hours: $200 NZD
  • Refreshments: $100 NZD

There will be seven meet-ups:

  • $450 x 7 = $3,150 NZD

Community engagement[edit]

Each meet-up will focus on a different sector of the arts community. For example the first meet-up will be about focusing on New Zealand Women painters. The second will be New Zealand Women craft and applied artists. The third will focus on New Zealand Maori Women artists and the fourth on New Zealand-based Pacific artists etc. For each meet-up we will then invite an artist from that community to join us. For a wider community participation, we will liaise with High School, tertiary education providers and community art societies.

Sustainability[edit]

A sustainable aspect of this project will be the continued collegial support of editors. We expect that our regular meet-up attendees will be encouraged and empowered to develop the connections made with the different art sectors throughout the duration of the project. It is hoped that the editors will also be advocates for the continuation of addressing gender gap issues within Wikipedia.

Measures of success[edit]

In a quantitative sense we will be able to record the edits and new articles uploaded by those who attend the meet-ups. However a signifier of the success of the meet-ups will be the continuation of Wikipedia editing by those who have attended. To measure this, we will ask attendees to offer feedback during and upon completion of the project.
