Grants:IdeaLab/Wikimedia Women Ambassadors Project (W2AP)
Project idea
[edit]What is the problem you're trying to solve?
[edit]This project will address women’s lack of representation on online media in the field of science and technology. To address this, the focus will be on two areas a) absent or poorly recorded contribution made by female scientists,b) relationship of women and technology at different point of history.
What is your solution?
[edit]Wikimedia Women Ambassadors Project (W2AP) will bring together 200 women ambassadors to collect scientific literary works that already published by female scientists and to write articles about that in Wikipedia. Thus, this W2AP project will contribute articles about female scientists and progress of women in the domain of technology and science. These women ambassadors will be selected from technological institutes who would have a good understanding on the subject of their choice and who already have fair knowledge of writing articles for different journals. This pilot project addressing women’s lack of representation on online media in the field of science and technology will run in two South Asian countries (India and Bangladesh). Primarily, these contributions will be in English along with two different South Asian languages i.e. Bengali and Hindi. The project work will be carried out by successfully completing the following:
a) Conducting workshops at technical and other institutions and universities in Bangladesh and India. .
b) Connecting civil society organisations and ‘Think Tanks’ that promote science and technology and seeking their guidance on how to reach hitherto unavailable work of female scientists so that the team can use it.
c) Providing guidance to participants on how to promote offline material available in science libraries or at research institutions through Wikimedia.
d) Giving clear instructions to follow Wikimedia’s policy to look for ideas those are properly documented through well-known sources. A Dos and Don’ts will be prepared following Wikimedia’s policy and the same will be circulated among the participants so that they can follow it.
e) Verifying all sources of contributing articles.
f) Providing proper guidance to all participants to produce better quality articles.
Goals
[edit]To enrich Wikimedia projects by resourceful gender focused content and engaging women as major contributor in the realm of women, science and technology. Once the work of female scientists and their contributions are promoted, it will act as an impetus for women to enter male- dominated domain of science and technology. Moreover, it will also fill up the digital information gap related to women and their contribution in science and technology.

Endorsements
[edit]- I am supporting this idea as it would bring together female scientists and female scientific writes to contribute in wikimedia to minimize the gender gap. INDRANI BISWAS (talk) 12:45, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
Expand your idea
[edit]a) Technological institutes and organisations from different field will be contacted to become part of the project. b) Participants will go through a workshop if locally available and for online participants online forum like goggle hangout or Skype will be used. c) During such sessions participants will get a very good understanding about what they are supposed to do and how to proceed further. d) There will be continuous monitoring on their activities. e) On the basis of merit of their contribution some awards will be given. This token amount for their writing work will help contributors to work hard and to look for suitable references that can add value to existing resource base of Wikimedia.
Do you want to submit your idea for funding from the Wikimedia Foundation?

Sustainability
[edit]Once the institutions and people will start contributing gradually they will develop the habit of writing similar topics and uploading the same on Wikimedia. Particularly, when the team members will come across similar topic they will try to get some time off to contribute the newly found piece to a larger audience. Contributing online is more of a habit that people develop over time once they find the technology easier to use. Same applies for accessing online documents. Hence, once participants know how to contribute, majority of them would feel like using that again.
