summary:
While writing Refugees in Cameroon it suddenly dawned on me that there are people all over the world sitting in refugee camps, who need education and constructive activities, both to give them hope, and to get their stories out to the world. A partnership between the Education Program and an NGO serving refugees could be a way to introduce Wikipedia as a way of educating children and adults, and simultaneously help people stuck in refugee camps start making some meaningful connections with the outside world.

Project idea[edit]

What is the problem you're trying to solve?[edit]

People stuck in refugee camps need education. They need positive, productive activities to give them hope and useful skills. They also need a way to stay engaged with the outside world, so that the rest of the world doesn't just let them starve, and so that they can make some meaningful connections to help them build new lives outside a refugee camp.

What is your solution?[edit]

Partnerships between the Wikipedia Education Program and NGOs serving refugees can explore new ways of using Wikipedia as a part of classroom instruction. These partnerships could result in expanding coverage of lesser-known parts of the world, or help develop encyclopedias in non-European languages.

The Ideas Box could be one way to deliver Wikipedia.

Other potential partners could be organizations like One Laptop per Child or educational research organizations.

There could also be synergy in bringing medical relief groups like Doctors Without Borders together with Wiki Project Med to improve basic health information in the languages of local populations.

Turkey's Killis refugee camp could be a possible prospect for a pilot project.
