Project goal

[edit]

Attendance and participation at Wikipedia Academy 2012, Berlin, presenting a paper with reflections on the factors of success for the Wikipedia Educational program in Brazil. It is also important to discuss the country specifics in terms of educational and community particulars.

Project scope and list of activities

[edit]

I intend to present during Wikipedia Academy the results of my experience teaching the first Brazilian university course with the Wikipedia Education Program, presenting my thoughts on the success of the course.

Paper title: Starting the Brazilian Wikipedia Education Program: educational and community specifics

Abstract:

The Brazilian participation on the Wikipedia Educational Project started in the second semester of 2011, with a pilot undergraduate course on Roman History at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State (UNIRIO). One experienced wikimedian [1] worked as Campus Ambassador, and two other members [2] [3] of the lusophone Wikipedia community acted as Online Ambassadors throughout the course. This paper discusses the implementation of this experience, together with the implications of the results obtained among the lusophone Wikipedia community, students and academia. Cultural and educational specifics of Brazil are also discussed, in that they must be carefully considered when planning the growth and development of the Wikipedia Educational Project in the country.

Non-financial requirements

[edit]

None.

Fit to strategy

[edit]

The paper will also detail and review all solutions applied throughout the semester related to motivating students, recruiting campus ambassadors and interaction with online community.

Other benefits

[edit]

By exchanging experiences with other participating countries in the projects, it will also strengh the Brazilian Wikipedia Educational program. I speak German as well, which I hope to be a helper in the exchange of ideas during the congress.

Measures of success

[edit]

Interaction with other wikipedians interested or working with the Wikipedia Educational Program around the world will help devise better strategies for our program in the future.
