Budget breakdown[edit]

  • Writer's time: USD 10,000

Project scope[edit]

Expand and update HOWTO Encourage Women and Linux so that it encompasses Wikipedia and other open technology and culture projects as well as Linux. The document will stay focused on concrete everyday actions that individual community members can take. The document will be licensed CC-BY-SA.

Project goal[edit]

The goal of this project is to increase the participation of women in Wikipedia in all roles. As a side effect, it will likely increase overall participation, since often the things that discourage women disproportionately also discourage all people, just at lower rates for non-women.

Non-financial requirements[edit]

We assume the Wikimedia foundation would like to publicize and host the document, but these aren't requirements.

Fit to strategy[edit]

This project will increase the number of people who feel comfortable editing Wikipedia.

Other benefits[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation will be acknowledged as a sponsor of the document in both the document itself and on the Ada Initiative web site.

Measures of success[edit]

If people frequently refer to the expanded HOWTO in Wikipedia discussions, then we consider this project a success.
