Grants:PEG/WM PH/Y4iT/Report

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project Goal: The goal of this project is to allow Wikimedia, through Wikimedia Philippines, to engage both the youth and key players in the local IT industry, allowing them to learn more about what Wikimedia has to offer and what they can do to help the movement prosper, both locally and abroad. To reach this goal, WMPH would serve as a vehicle for empowering the youth: making them aware of what we do and allowing them to get on board, contributing to WMPH's advocacy of encouraging nation-building and the development of a Filipino social consciousness through the projects.

Description of actual activities:

Some of the video highlights of Y4iT
September 13, 2010 - Day 0: Ingress : Placed Wikipedia paraphernalia and prepared exhibit booth.
September 14, 2010 - Day 1: Event Opens : Thousands of participants in attendance and many of whom registered at the Wikimedia Philippines booth.
September 15, 2010 - Day 2: WMPH Talk at the UP Film Institute - WMPH was invited to speak at the conference and WMPH Vice President Joseph Ballesteros gave a talk entitled "Wikipedia Revolutionizes the Web". It focused on the development and significance of free and accessible knowledge through the use of Wikipedia. The event received an overwhelming response with jam-packed audience presence and warm interaction at the open forum afterwards. The said event further drove participants to visit the WMPH booth at the UP Bahay ng Alumni. The event was covered and can be viewed in Youtube.com
September 16, 2010 - Day 3 : WMPH at an open event - WMPH President Josh Lim was invited to speak at the UP Bahay ng Alumni about the current Wikimedia online projects and existing projects created by the Philippine Wikipedia Community. The event also drew a lot of participation from the Y4iT young delegates. Images of the event were posted in Facebook and WMPH fan page count increased.
September 17, 2010 - Day 4 : Closing - WMPH booth continues to be visited in huge numbers. WMPH were invited by various educational institutions like the Technological Institute of the Philippines. The organization accepted invitation to the Software Freedom Day 2010. It was held also at the University of the Philippines on the succeeding day. It was hosted by the Computer Professionals Union of the Philippines.

Overall, the event was well attended with an estimated 20,000 young participants, members of the academe and IT professionals. About 2,500 wrote at the exhibit guestbook and about 13,000 registered at the data bank.

What lessons were learned that could help others succeed in similar projects? The project was a success and it became a "coming-out" event for the organization. It received favorable response from the young audience at the said convention and created a buzz on social media through a report from local media outlet GMA News Online. Rather than having its own organized grand launch event, then newly established Wikimedia Philippines used the opportunity to draw attention from an existing well attended IT event.

As expected in any new organization, many lessons were learned in this event. Most of which are event management and brand strategy.

What impact did the project have on WMF mission goals of Increased Reach, Increased Quality, Increased Credibility, Increased and Diversified Participation?

It was able to gain exposure to an audience formed from a broad national constituency. This event served as a vehicle for WMPH to reach out to people from all across the country, informing them of the aims, objectives and goals of Wikimedia, and spreading its message all across the Philippines, particularly to areas we may be unable to reach.
